I just got a Capri 25 and I need a outboard engine. I found a Nissan 5hp which has a 19 inches shaft. Do you think that length would be adequate for the boat?

Also I'm a little bit concern about the height of my boom. When the main sail is complete display the boon goes very near to the top of the cabin, I've saw some pic of other Capris 25 and the booms seems to be higher than mine. Can someone tel me the average height of the boom, my boat came with the boom down so I don't know if I placed wrong

Thank you

I think to answer you outboard question you first need to look at your transom height. So far I've not seen any factory information on outboard mounting brackets. Seems a lot of different configurations have been used. My boat has an adjustable transom mount that is 16" above the waterline when lowered. To that I have a 2 hp 20" long shaft outboard mounted. This works in all conditions except when too much crew gets on the foredeck.

Regarding your boom. It sounds like you may not have a factory spec mainsail. Go to the Manuals & Brochures section of this website and look for the Capri 25 Owners Manual (1988) pdf file. Open that and scroll to the end of the document to find dimensions for the sails.
Also at the begining of that document is a elevation of the boat and you can see the relative height of the boom to the top of the cabin.
It is not tight by any means, in fact I think it is a very comfortable height above the cockpit for most users. I would estimate mine is at least 24" to 30" above the cabin top.

5hp is more than enough to power the boat. 19" shaft might be long enough, depends on where/how the mount is set up.

The boom could be an issue, tho. "<i>Very near the top of the cabin</i>" sounds pretty low, this isnt a Star. The P-measurement for the Capri25 is 26'6", from the top of the boom extrusion to the bottom of the mast band. The mast itself is 29'6". Accounting for the crane and whatnot, that would put the boom about 2-2.5' above the step. That should get you into the ballpark, I can do an actual measurement next time I'm at the boat.

Thank you all for answering. I'm still learning and working on getting ready the boat. However, bad weather here in Miami is killing me this weekend.
