Lets say you are in a race, and as the high PHRF boat are at the back of the fleet, but still in good standing. If you have a DSC radio, could you use it to your advantage to plot th etracklogs of the rest of the fleet? Here is what I am thinking.
With DSC, you can plug in the call signs of other boats and then be able to find their position with the radio. If you plugged in the call signs of your friends, your radio should be able to locate them, and give you their positions on the lake (provided their GPS is plugged into their radio.) Has anyone come across a way to repeatedly peel those position reports off the radio and plot them on a chartplotter (or laptop) to ocme up with tracklogs of the other boats in the vicinity?
In our race scenario, you would be able to see which side of the course was faster by the boats ahead of you, where the currents were giving a boost, and who had the greatest advanctage, possibly down to very fine detail.
Someone has to have come up with this technology. I know Rally car drivers are doing it using Ham radios.

What are the odds of either? Your idea could have some value in a one-design match race--like the Americas Cup (if you can get them to answer your call... "Alinghi, Alinghi...").
So then I guess this begs the question of whether DSC polling is available to all competitors? OK I won't try to write up some code to use this info, but I just thought it might be an idea worth exploring.

Then use it for a fleet-wide post-race analysis. Great for bragging rights for the winners and a good learning opportunity for others.
But then I'm a techie, and things like that interest me..
