Yesterday was a very crappy day offshore with 9 footers and strong southerlies, so we stayed put in the anchorage in Wrightsville Beach NC.
The morning started off sorta normal enough, one boat had dragged during the night into another boat by the bridge and their ground tackle was fouled - together. Tow Boat was on scene.
Then I noticed SV (name omitted) a brand new Tartan 34 owned by a black plumber from Chicago. Now, this guy is a single hander and just went to the boat show and paid for the boat in cash. So that makes him unique. He's black and out here that makes him unique. AND he is the only vessel ever to hail on 16 at 02:00 after a little dinner party, "Hey Lysistrata, I'm over here rolling a big fattie. You wanna come over?" "Uh sure - SV SYLVESTER THE TWEETY BIRD OUT!" I mean are you kidding me? Freaked me out, but the Coasties have better things to do I am sure.
Anyway, about noon, the anchorage is a rolling with 30-35 knots of wind and some fetch. This big cat comes in and anchors nearby BACKWARDS and shortly thereafter hails us on 16. "Lysistrata, I see that dinghy of yours in the water. How soon are you going in because we need some beverages other than coke."
I told him we'd boot up and get some current weather info to see if it would abate. Meanwhile the guy is standing just looking intently. I come back with the report that the weather was supposed to deteriorate even more until dark or so... Thunderstorms, strong gusts... He say's "Heck, let's go now. I'd really appreciate it."
I foulied up, pfd'd and grabbed the handheld - Standard let's go save someone gear and climbed into the dink. Now I love my Zodiac and the new 6 horse really does zip it around, but I was getting tossed around pretty good even though I was sitting on the floor. This guy climbs into the dink and sits on the bow almost. As I powered up we started to surf a bit and I was just going to tell him that he should move back a bit when we came down the face of this wave and buried the bow! Filled the Zodiac immediately. He grabbed the pump - good thing I had one and started bailing.
Got him ashore and he apologized for bringing me out in those conditions and then returned with a 24 pack of Bud Light, a six pack of Corona for me, and a carton of butts. Hmmmm.... me thinks the butts were the source of the anxiety and deep desire to go to the store...
Anyway, made it back, dried off and enjoyed well deserved beer!
SO - what would YOU do for a beer or a Klondike bar?

DPO Zephyr - '82 C25, FK, SR SV Lysistrata - C&C 39 - Wrightsville Beach - going offshore to ST. Augustine Today! Gonna be cold! Hoping to skip Charlestown!
Sten, were you in some sort of karmic debt that you felt you needed to balance the books up a bit? I think I'd make a run like that if someone was hurt, but not if they were jonesing for a butt or a Bud.
This Living aboard on the hook looks like fun and a full time job too. I don't think I could do my full work week + take care of a boat like you do. But then again if I were to live aboard and work full time, I would most probably be in a slip. However if not working, then heck yeah I wouldn't mind the exercise.

Always pay it forward. You never know - they were offshore with us yesterday and we know they would have helped us if needed...
It was wackadoo, but for a fellow sailor who had to come in from the outside becasue of their mast height - I'll do a practice assist.
I'm sorry but the next time I see someone run aground hard I -will not- be able to keep from laughing and thinking they were probably trying to get the big fattie re-lit :)
Bad for your night vision!
Destin harbor, the harbor taxi would come by and give you a flag, if you raised the flag they would pick you up and take you where ever you wished in the harbor. From the boat you could here 5 different Jimmy Buffet songs live and out of tune coming from the bars. Sometimes you'd go in just to keep it down to one song.
