I am planning a trip to the Florida Keys in February and March. I will be using Ohio Key as a base and sail around the lower keys. I am hoping to make it out to the Dry Tortugas sometime during my stay. I have a few friends that are interested and one couple that have confirmed for the month of March. If anyone is interested, just email me.
Paul, I have reservations at the marina at Sunshine Key RV park. I stayed there 2 years ago and had a great time. I will be doing day sails and overnighters around the area. The marina is on the Gulf side of the key and is 5 miles west of the cut under the seven mile bridge. The bay area averages 10ft deep. I have no itinerary at this time, other than planning a trip out to the Dry Tortugas. I will have a plan by the time I get there, and then I will wait for a weather window. I am going to go with the flow, and change plans according to weather and other friends interests.
It's been a decade but I've camped Ohio Key a couple of times. Chased little bone fish around with my fly pole, spooked a huge barracuda. Fun place, nice little Marina, seems like it was about 40 miles from Key West by road.
Hi Paul, This is one of those instances where Google Earth's locations are off just a bit. Ohio Key is actually the next island west and south. Here's one of my favorite pics I took during a rain storm there, probably 1999. Nice camping facility, pool, marina, store, gas, fishing dock.
Paul, The "google maps again" is the correct location. They put the sailboats at the end of the docks. I am using the dock closest to the harbor entrance.
Sounds like fun. I just got back from the Keys. We launched from harbor point marina and based out of Boot Key Harbor. It was great. The wind was a bit strong most of the time. Our first time sailing on the ocean so we didn't push it. I wanted to go to the Dry Tortugas but I found out you need to plan ahead and I am not a planner.
