A new boat showed up at our club last week, a C&C 99 with a blood red hull. Some of our sailors have moved on to C&Cs and of course we all admire the the C&C and Tartans. This makes two Tartans and four C&Cs at the club, I think for a mud hole that's pretty good. Anyway, this 99 is an amazing looking boat. Has anyone spent any time on one?
I just Googled the 99 and it sure is purdy! I've been on a couple Tartans and C&Cs at boat shows. It always seemed to me the Tartans were a higher quality boat. They're made by the same company though, aren't they? Anyway, maybe it was just a gut feeling made me feel the Tartans were nicer.

I crewed on a C&C 99 a couple of times at Annapolis. I'd classify it as a mix between a cruiser and racer, but can't say which side is prevalent. It's certainly not comparable with a J, but it performs very nicely. There are enough racing at Annapolis that they can race one-design. If you like to race, but want a boat that is fitted out comfortably enough so you can cruise as well, the C&C 99 would be a good choice.
In the past few years C&C and Tartan, which have always been highly regarded for good designs and high quality construction, have both come upon economic hard times, and boats built after about 2002 have reportedly had problems. I didn't see any evidence of those problems on the boat I sailed, but, of course, I didn't really look.
If the recent market downturn hadn't destroyed my retirement nestegg -sic, I would give serious consideration to the C&C 99, Beneteau 10R, or, if I were just racing, the new Columbia 30.
When we decided to go cruising, I thought for sure we would buy a full keel ketch. Slow boat to China.... Along came Lysistrata and the rest is history. C&C makes fast boats - period. Our old school 39.6 rocks the house and is capable of 9 knots in 13 knots of wind! OK, I only did that once and will forever try to duplicate.
$51,000.00 - done...
DPO Zephyr - '82 C25, FK, SR SV Lysistrata - C&C 39 - Savannah GA for a month! Didn't quite make it to Floreeda! Long story, big seas, strong winds, frigid temps.
