I was looking at the 'Terrain' view of BC the other day, and again today. Today the terrain shows much more details, not the same line drawing style but a crisp colored topographic view.
I think google is on a 3 year cycle to upgrade depending on data regionally.
Most orthographic photography is done in the fall after the leaves drop, but before the snow falls, so this is the time of year that a lot of northern areas do their mapping.
Often regional gov't have better orthomaps than Google can offer, although not with interfaces thta are as advanced. If you are looking for something specific to a municipality (maybe a harbour??) it is often worthwhile to check out th ecity's planning, mapping, surveying, or GIS departments.
At first I viewed the North Carolina coast near Oriental in Terrain and I said to myself, "Self what is Paul talking about". It is relatively all flat terrain so I did not notice anything remarkable.
However when I viewed Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming I can see clearly what you were talking about. It is not you.
I'm not seeing anything different myself. The data they are using is still about 3 years old. They just launched a new satellite that will improve the reolution up to the allowed maximum but that won't be out for awhile yet.
I can find out for you though as soon as my son calls me back. He works for Google in Mountain view california. He does extensive testing on google's software releases.
I’m only guessing because I do not have a clue about this stuff. But I think Paul is referring to Google Maps which has a “Terrain” button on the top right hand side of the screen. Along with Satellite and Map buttons.
I just talked to my son and he said they are updating the data in Maps & Earth all the time. Some areas (like mine) have not been updated in 6 years. The new satellite that went up last month will bring even better quality.
The data is purchased from various companies that Google uses as sources. The data is used in both their products (earth and Maps). If anyone out there has not tried Google earth, give it a go - it's free and really amazing.
