Here are some photos of the bow we just chopped off of a friend of mines Catalina 25. We had to make it 5 feet shorter for the wrecker to be able to haul her to the land fill. It did not detach until the last little bit of fiberglass was cut. Very strong stuff!
It was damaged and washed in this parking lot during IKE. Keel to boat joint was damaged and the mast was snapped. Insurance paid for the boat but the owner was responsible to get rid of it. The apartment complex was suing him for 3000 to get rid of it. For the wrecker to haul it off it had to be under 20 feet in length for him to take it.
Looks pretty bent up, we will be down at the boat again tomorrow. The stern pulpit is in decent shape I think. The boat is at the Landing off of Nasa Rd 1. In Seabrook
Basically insurance settled with me for $4000 and left the bitch in my hands. I love that boat but Im no fool, insurance said 6k in damage done and that was probably a good estimate. She just needed too much work.
I originally bought that boat to learn to sail and occupy me on the weekends and keep living my life of adventure. She did all of those things and did them well. My attention soon turned to offshore sailing and getting into a boat that could one day take me around the world safely as this is a big dream of mine. I had to cut my losses with her and turn my attention to more blue water boats because we can all agree, the C-25 just isnt going to "get me there". I should have tried harder to exhaust all my resources and I could have given her a good home but after 3 months of having this boat drive me up the wall and back down, Im ready to "move on".
Insurance took their sweet ass time with everything which pissed me off. Then the condo association came knocking calling 3 times a week asking for a date of removal. Well, I cant move it yet, Im waiting on insurnace, fight with them if you want a date. Everyone was giving me the run around but I finally got paid. I told the association people that in all fairness I would do what I could but they should give me 2 months because those 2 months were wasted by insurance. They said that wasnt going to happen and they were going to sue me for $3500 for the boat removal. I pinned a lot of my hopes on this salvage guy from Alabama. He showed up this week and dropped off the face of the earth, I havent heard from him in 2 weeks and he wont return my calls. Thanks for screwing me. In my last ditch effort to save the money my insurance paid me, I grabbed my phone and an axe. Houston landfill costs $400 for her and another $500 for a wrecker to get her there on a flat bed, but I have to shorten the length. No problem. Im already pissed at this whole thing, sorry my poor c-25 but your getting the "chop".
If anyone would like parts, come and get them. You have 1 week. I still have...
1) good rudder with brand new tiller 2) %110 Jib 3) blown out main 4) anchor locker cover 5) genoa tracks and all stanchions (bow and stern pulpits were damaged from.... a falling tree!) 6) hatchboard covers, 90% finished on re-varnish 7) original cushions inside, worn though and very wet from rain 8) head/forepeak original catalina accordian style door 9) sink pumps 10) water tank 11) hatch cover 12) front hatch cover
thats pretty much it. I have here in my home, the rudder/tiller, jib, and hatchboards and Im willing to sell them cheap. Shipping will be an issue with the rudder but I might be able to figure something out.
Pm me if you want anything.
Like I said, this broke my heart but at the same time, when shes finally smashed to hell in that landfill, I will be able to sleep again. Ill always remember this boat and thank God my buddy Chris grabbed her id plate with hull number and model for my memories. Ill post some pictures of her later.
Catalina 25 owners, your hulls, especially on the bow, while cored are freaking bulet proof! Solid almost a half inch! Pics soon.
I understand the awful position you were in and clearly you feel badly about the whole thing. Still, it is painful to see an axe taken to one of our boats. I wish you the best in your quest for a blue water boat and many adventures to come. Maybe Neptune will cut you a break with future storms - you've paid your dues.
I wonder if it would have been any worse environmentally to drag it to the water, float out a ways and then sink her. Artificial reef??

Randy,
Unfortunately where the boat is located on Clear Lake the water is only about 6' deep so it would only become a navigation hazard. Even in Galveston Bay the water depth only averages 8-10'.
I have a few pictures of her that I took out on the bay last year when we met up. Let me know if you'd like some of them.
Did the accordian doors get wet or damaged? I might be interested in those and possibly the tiller. Do you have the track the doors ride in? One of my tracks is split and the door won't stay in the track when you open it.
I'm in Missouri City so shipping shouldn't be an issue.
If anyone is about chop up their boat, they might post it here and other sites. When I decided to get rid of a Southcoast I posted it on the internet at 10:30 at night and it was taken by morning.
Ask and it shall be taken away.
I'd love a copy of that video... it's pretty funny in a wicked sick kinda way. Once the pain subsides..
David: Sorry to hear about your excitement. Sounds like the Gods owe you one. I have an 83 also and am in need of a stanchion as the result of a crash. If sizes differ, it's the one in front of the starboard gate. If it's in decent shape, I could be a player. Get back Ed
no life lines, I cut them with bolt cutters. sorry :(
I might be able to get the stanchions off with an axe/saw, i dont have time to be messing with throughbolts and yadda yadda. i can cut the deck around the base and just send them like that.
l know it makes perfect sense to utilize the parts of this boat, kind of like organ donation but .......... Somehow I'm still getting the feeling we're stealing the shoes off a dead guy.
have you been getting my reponses? im kinda doing this on a first come first serve and welll... other people are getting in line for parts and no one has replied to my emails. please let me know if you have pm'ed me and not recieved a return email yet
the last email I got from you was asking about a shorepower cord...
did you get my email about me heading to the mississippi gulf coast for thanks giving and if you could meet me in Pascagoula or something we could do a part exchange.
Yeah guys I was there last Sunday and saw the boat, pretty sad to see the damage. David is a really cool guy and in my opinion he took a tough but right decision to move on and keep only the good memories.
My C25 was also totalled by the insurance company, but the hull with minor damage and floating. They let me keep the hull for free (I guess they didn't want to pay to get rid of her) so my wife and I decided to take the project and rebuild her.
Many thanks for the parts David, unfortunately the mast I bought is a tall rig, so the mast head you gave me didn't fit. Do you want it back? I'm sure you can sell it as well. Regarding your stern pulpit, although damaged I think I can repair it for a fraction of what CD is charging for a new one... Do you mind if I come by this afternoon to take it? Best regards, Vini

Yea, its sad but it has to be done. I dont trust the keel attachment points anymore.
Vini, it didnt fit at all? I thought the standard and tall had the same masthead arrangment. hrm.. no way to modify it? Stick with it man, once you get her sailing, she will be amazing. They are wonderful boats and very forgiving and I can attest to that. I put mine through hell with very substandard equipment.
Your welcome to the stern pulpit, take what you want.
I think Im seeing people are put off by my asking (in my opinion ridiculously low prices) but here's the deal. I have to do the work of removing everything and packing it up for shipping, something im not keen on. I want this boat out of my life, like a divorce minus the kids. GONE... I mean, Im selling my rudder with brand new CD tiller with tiller cover for $200 + $95 in shipping from fedex, thats a steal. Im not trying to make a million bucks, if your local, come get what you want, if your not, Im charging pennies to offset the work I have to do to get it, especially stanchions. Selling stanchions at $10 a pop is more than fair I think when I have to find a way to axe them out for you. Thats a lot of work and sweat my friends and if $10 a pop isnt worth it, then you can call CD and pay $60 each.
better email or reply to my emails tonight, that boat is history tomorrow.
