Anything that can produce light can be a life saver. I recently read about a rescue helicopter that spotted a boat in distress at night when the skipper attracted their attention with the light produced by an MP3 player. That seemed to be very clever and resourceful.

When I was in the US Navy, they told us no smoking on deck at night during war time. They claim the enemy can see a ciragette 10 miles away.
