I have participated in a few races; High Sierra Regatta (a bunch of times, three Delta Ditch Runs, and our local small club races. I have never been to the catalina nationals. Since therre is going to be one close by in SF I'd like to go. What goes on at them, how many races will there be etc. Do people stay on their boats or go to hotels? I'd rather stay on the boat myself. To be honest it is close in time to the Delta Ditch Run and I have to decide which to go to, work dictates that I choose one. I am leaning to the Catalina race but would like more information.
Thanks
Matt

The National Regatta is planned and organized by the local organization or club that sponsors it, and they have broad discretion in how they do it. It is usually four or more around-the-buoy races held on Saturday and Sunday. People can usually choose whether they want to stay on their boats or in a motel. Drawings are usually held for some very nice door prizes that are provided to participants. There is always a party and a dinner, either on the premises of the club, or at an agreed-upon restaurant or club off-site. There are almost always a number of C25/250, etc. owners who don't want to race their own boats, but who are available to crew for anyone who needs extra crew. Usually arrangements are made to help the boats launch from trailers and retrieve them. If you have a gps, bring it. Some of the regattas are as exciting and eventful as any national regatta could be, like the ones held during Cleveland Race Week, and others are less spectacular, but they're always fun. Of course, there's always a lot of jawboning going on among the members. Occasionally, a cruise is planned for after the regatta, for people who can spare the time for it. Trophies are handed out during a ceremony after the last race on Sunday.

Steve,

Each national regatta is different.
For 2009 please see the posting on the Racing section -> 2009 NOR
Registration is Friday 4pm-6pm June-19
Berkeley Yacht Club has their Friday night race at 6:30 with a BBQ afterward.
We can use the Friday night race a practice.
The Catalina Regatta races start on Sat. (3 races)
and Sun. (2 races).
The race course will be in the Olympic Circle .
Windward/Leeward (4nm each race).

There will be an informal dinner on Sat. night and awards dinner on Sunday.
We are working on trophies and door prizes.

You can stay in a hotel (at the marina) or stay on your boat.
You could also crew on someone elses boat.

I would like to hear about other regatta events.
I would also like to hear what you would like to see in a regatta.

Thanks, Russ Johnson
2009 Vice-Commodore (and national regatta organizer)
