Reading the thread on Gudgeon/Pintle replacement got me thinking (always dangerous). If anyone has a pair of old gudgeons hanging about, would you send them my way (we can negotiate a price).

Condition is not important. I want to bolt them to the basement wall to store the rudder in the off season, rather than have it hanging from the rafters (as it is now).

Thanks!

Seems like a couple of well placed & sized eye lag bolts would do the trick?

Just thinking that would be a lot of stress on the rudder, since the rudder would not weigh as much because half of it is floating when its on the boat at dock (I checked, my rudder floats, at least my old one did). I am thinking the best way to store would be store it perfectly vertical, either long way or short way, I would think like you said better than laying flat. Of course too, you could argue the rudder takes a beating under way, and should be ok regardless, but again, i would think a vertical position, resting on the floor, with a piece of wood under it to get it off the floor.

Excellent post -- got me thinking. The ideal way i to set the eyes/gudgeon's so the rudder is about an inch off the ground and then shim it so it is hanging but has just a little emergency support. If done right it may not be as ideal as when hanging over the stern in water, but it will be a lot better than the way I store it, which is leaning slightly against a wall.

I leave my rudder on since we have good sailing days off and on all year in Dallas, but if I was going to store it I would screw the eye bolts in the garage ceiling close to a wall and hang it out of the way. It's on weight should prevent warping. And can you believe we're having this much discussion about how stuff the rudder out of the way? We must be missing the water.

Naw Crunk...

You haven't tried to store a 6 foot tall rudder in your basement lately, have you? Mine lives ther efrom October through May, and trust me, it gets in the way, and has plenty opportunity to deform. Its worth thinking about new storage methds.

I was hoping someone would have some old Gudgeons though... Anyone? I may just have to do the lag bolts as suggested above.

Back when we were still doing a launch & recovery for each trip, I started working on a mount for the rudder that would store it alongside the keel on the trailer. Basically I cut out an airfoil (waterfoil?) shape that fit the rudder where I wanted to hang it, about 4/5 down from the tiller fitting, then I planned on drilling a bolt hole to mate with the tiller fitting through the trailer frame. My boat sits (sat) with it's port side facing south in the yard, so I was going to install it so it was on the starboard side & out of the sun. This wasn't as much work as it might sound, it only took me two tries to get the rudder cutout right, and the first try was in 1/2" plywood since I knew it'd need some tweakage. Of course you need a jigsaw or bandsaw to make the cut, but you could probably make it in two halves & epoxy it together (I'd bolt it as well just to be sure).

Just another thought, might get your rudder out of your way.

If anyone's interested, I can take pictures and give dimensions.

Added a post in the Catalina 25 area to discuss off-season storage of rudders so the topic is in the correct Forum for maximum input.
