At some point I would like to sail my c25 in the sea of cortez, possibly trailering it to San Felipe then spending a few weeks in the northern end of the Sea of Cortez. Has anyone done any Mexico sailing or have any tips for this kind of vacation. I have family that used to trailer their S2 down from Denver once a year to do this vacation but that was over 20 years ago and I'm sure things have changed.
Some mistakes are just too fun to only do once. 1982 C25 #3276 Owl Harbor Isleton, CA
San Felipe has a harbor and launch ramp. However, I would not recommend going there. Tides run out literally 2 miles and the entire harbor is dry at low tide. There is a good highway down from Mexicali but it has like 30 foot dropoffs on either side in some areas with many wrecks laying where they landed. There is not much to do there, sail down to Puerto Penasco I guess.
Your best bet is to do what many Arizona sailors do, stay on the mainland side. Trailer down to a place called Rocky Point, near Guymas.
The question is...How much time do you have? If "lots" is the answer you could sail her down like some kooky friends of mine. They sailed their 27'cat from Hood River, OR to La Paz, MX. I took them about a month and a half leaving Oregon last October. Here's their blog: http://oilfreefun.blogspot.com/
If little is the answer, you could book a yacht thru the moorings. Last I looked it was about $400/day. I'm thinking of doing this next year. $4000 for 10 days seems like alot, but should things go wrong--it's really not.
Guymas is a great place, and not too far of a drive from the Hermosillo airport. Not sure of bareboat options from there... IMHO some of the best places are down south From Mulege to Cabo Pulmo. The many islands down there are amazing, including bahia conception and Isla Espiritu Santos.
I frequent the area for kiteboarding, and would love to get my boat down there, but from experience-- It is unlikely that you will return with your boat if you drive through Northern Mexico-- Right now a gringo driving a yacht through is asking for it. I speak from experience. Not to mention should anything break on the way-- there is little to no luck getting it fixed. Baja Sur is a great safe area. -- If you can find a way to get your rig back safe, let me know!
Vince Radice moderates the sailing forum and can be very helpful. The harbor at San Carlos is reputed to be one of the best in Sonora and is very accessible by highway from Tuscon. Guaymas is nearby and is an fun, authentic Mexican community with its own marina recently finished.
There also used to be a Sea of Cortez forum on trailersailor.com, but it is no longer maintained.
Jim B is correct. Go down to San Carlos and sail the northern Cortez from there. San Carlos has a nice marina. I have been to the marina but not sailed out of it. However, my close friends trailer their Macgregor 26 and stay in San Carlos every year. They enjoy the area enough to have bought a time share there.
I used to run a University outdoor program and I would take a group of students to Mexico scuba diving every spring break. I did that for 17 years. I have had nothing but good experiences down there. I would love to launch our C25 at San Carlos, its a beautiful harbor. The road down there is very do-a-able, four lane most of the way. I spent new years this year on a small island just off Bahia De Los Angles, we were sea kayaking. The road down there has improved a lot over the past few years, still I just don't have what it takes to tow my boat down that road. It's very narrow in places and Trucks have no fear. Towing a small, light kayak trailer is about as intense as I can take. I can,t comment on the political situation but, all of the people I have met across the border have been friendly, gratuitous, and helpful, I can't sat enough good about the people. Clay C
Thanks for all of the good pointers. KiteKraemer your friends are crazy! But I can't say if I was 25 years younger and had access to that sailboat I wouldn't have tried something similar. I will definitely check into San Carlos, it sounds very doable, for winter of 10'.
