Does the moon rise over that mountain? We flatlanders love our big sky but that sure is beautiful.

I took my KC Chief loving Kansan wife to Vancouver for the first time a couple of years ago and she was ready to defect. Grouse mountain, Stanley Park, English Bay. We rented a stinkpot for an afternoon and cruised around Stanley park and played with the float planes and the ship traffic. Awesome place! When I become a CLOD - Cruiser Living On Dirt - we plan on spending some time there.

Or we'll buy a Pilothouse Ketch and live there!

Actually, I will be sailing today...temps will hit a high of 40F and winds 5-10mph. Then I sort of head into your neck of the woods south of you starting tomorrow thru Friday. I will be in the Seattle/Bremerton, WA area.

It must be great to sail where there is always water!

Our target launch is early April but that is God willing and the Army Corps of Engineers doing its thing.

Do others have this situation?

Here are two links that show the status of our lake/resevoir:

The fill curve

7 day history

We usually put in at 370 feet. As you can see we are behind the curve. Please rain!!!!

We are planning our launch for th efirst week of May. I have approximately 276.8 chores to complete by then. At my current rate of completion I will be launching in late October of 2023.

Luckily (?) I am on our club's exec and can go to an executive meeting every month until spring. At least sailboat talk keeps me warm and happy. We have managed to set up the club's racing/social/cruising calendar such that every weekend, tuesday and thursday from May through October is filled. By the end of summer my only point of reference will be sailing.

Plenty of Water in Daytona Bch as well, but Larry, I can't imagine heading out in 40 degree weather! I will get out this week-end though, it's supposed to be close to 80!! I'm looking for 60 at least before I leave the dock! Oh, and nice pic!

In summer its nice but all other 3 seasons you quickly figure out that it rains almost all the time with grey skies. Seldom do you see the sun. Since it's so damn hard getting a green card to work in the States my wife and have resigned ourselves to wait and retire in the States. No way are we staying in freezing Canada, eh. 15 years to go.

As an agreement between Canada and the United States, us Canadians cannot even apply for the Green Card lottery. I believe that since both of our countries are so linked together economically, that it is mutualy agreed upon to make it difficult for Canadians to emigrate to the States because Canada would probably loose a majority of their population.

When I look at all of your pictures and stories of sailing in your perpetual summers I am so jealous!

Steve,
Not to dispute you, but why is it so hard to get a green card here for Canadians? I have a number of Canadian friends here with theirs. Maybe it used to be easier to do? I know getting Rita's green card was almost anti-climatic, but being married to an American probably helped. We have other friends here who are working on H1-B visas who are trying very hard to get green cards, and others who have theirs who are simply waiting out the time till they can take the citizenship test.

I've been reading on the subject for quite some time. I owned a stored in VA beach about 10 years ago and back then my lawyers were setting things up to get me a green card. Well we ended up closing that store and that was the end of that. My bigest problem is that I haven't finished my University Degree, however I have been working in the IT field for a long long time which I believe I can get an equivalency for. I have no legal reasons to forbid my entrance such as a criminal record or other, and to my knowledge I am not a terorist and certainly not a communist! (I think that was even worst that being a terrorist at some time).

I think the H1B visas are closed at the moment in the IT field (you got enough of us nerds already). But I could go for a T1 visa, which requires a yearly renewal up to 5 consequtive years. The truth is that if you keep out of trouble then you get renewed and can start the an application.

People laugh when I tell 20-30 year olds "don't do the mistake I did, study in the states, meet a nice American girl and marry her." I love my wife, but if I could go back...

I'm currently building extremely valuable experience here at my current company (SAP implementations). We are expanding, but I wouldn't mind working for a similar one in the states either. Now that you have forced me to rethinking all of this you're absolutely right, I should at least try. Anyways my plan was to start applying in the next 2 years unless my current company wants to transfer me over.

Vida Nova is an American born girl that I bought in Oregon, and I am kinda married to her...does that count?

About your wife's legal status, I thought that as soon as you married an American then it was a done deal?

Not really, just used to a different climate And only 5 to 10 week-ends a year are in that temp range so I still have 40 or so good week-ends to pick from

Guess I am a wimp living in SoCal. Unless it rains, I can be out sailing- though I did sail back from Catalina once in a light rain. Don't get me wrong, it gets cold here, maybe in hi 50's and I enjoy sailing in that brisk coolness. Its invigorating but its not often. I actually do prefer it on the cool side, sailing or not.
Bottom line, I dont mind being a wimp as long as I have more time to sail.

Hah, guys I was just teasing a bit. I miss living in southern California, and would MUCH rather have warm weather to sail in. I'd like to be able to jump over the side for a dip w/o fear of severe shrinkage. Or need a bimini to keep the sun off instead of the rain. I used to sail Hobie cats on Mission Bay. You could sail all day long in a pair of shorts & a liberal coating of sunscreen. Up here in Budd Bay (south Puget Sound by Olympia) I made the mistake once of taking my Venture cat out in 90° weather w/o my wetsuit. It doesn't make the slightest bit of difference how warm it is outside when the water you're getting splashed with constantly is 45°-50°, it sucks the warmth right out of you. I spent a total of 45 minutes sailing that day and had the heater running in my truck afterwards trying to warm back up with my teeth chattering.

you know Steve, there are other options for us. Canada already has so much invested in Cuba, we should just take over the island and have our own "Sunshine Province."

From what I've heard, nearly half the boats in Havanna Yacht Club are Canadian... you could just go there and be a live-aboard. Maintain Canadian Citizenship (for healthcare etc.) live in the sun on the cheap, sell daysailing "adventures" to tourists. Might not be such a bad gig...

On the Wimp subject: I aspire to be wimps just like you someday.
On the Cuba subject: You're absolutely right, Mexico is another good spot. Cuba is the primo spot for Quebecers, lots of french speaking. However the problem is that I'm 42 and still have to work. With the USA I would have it all, nice sailing weather, same job, same house so the kids and wife don't complain. If it would be just me, I would've left ages ago.

It has rained hard the past week here. I love it!!

Look at the "fill curve" now!! I plan to be in the water early April.

The red line is the plan. The blue line is the actual.

It'll be a while by the looks of things today.

When the ice melts (it will melt won't it?) we have to wait for the lake level to be brought up. http://waterdata.usgs.gov/mt/nwis/uv?site_no=12371550 Chesapeake was the second put in our marina on the last day of May 2008.

Dan,

You have to be more patient than most other sailors. Brrrr. it looks like a cold snap there.

We still have snow on the ground here in Central New York.

I'm back from my Seattle/Bremerton business trip and...went down to my boat today to once again put the cover on it for at least a few days until we get past what is predicted to be 4-8" of snow tonight/tomorrow. Hope there is enough for the Govt to shut down - Don't want to use my vacation days yet...so may have to slug it out tomorrow morning to get to work.

Okay...maybe sailing in 40F is not eveyone's cup of tea. Usually when I do go sailing in high 30s- mid 40s, there are not a heck of a lot of boats out there but it can be very enjoyable as long as the wind is not blowin too hard. Out in Bremerton/Seattle area, I did not see much action out there at all. Maybe I saw one sailboat ! I thought I would see more out there since weather was even up to 50F or so for some of the days I was on travel. What did surprise me was 2 guys in wet suits out on sailboards driven by those kites. Not sure what you call that...the name escapes me. But I was amazed they were out in cold weather and the wind was ...maybe 15mph. They were able to somehow tack with those sailboards/kites and get back to their starting points.

California is now in it's third year of below-normal precipitation. Gov. Schwarzenegger declared a statewide "drought emergency" this week; most of the large State and Federal reservoirs are way below the water storage level they should have on March 1st. Folsom Lake, where I keep Quiet Time, has just barely enough water to float the marina docks - three weeks ago they were high and dry on the mud - but there's been a few days of rain and the harbormaster is going to open the marina this Saturday for slip renters to put in.

Unfortunately, the snow level in the mountains east of the lake is barely half of the 25-year average, and it's the melt water from that snow that we depend on to keep the marina open as the summer progresses. In 2007 and 2008, Folsom Lake dropped so quickly in June, as BuRec began it's summer water deliveries, that the marina had to shut down in early July; the lake had barely started to warm up to comfortable swimming temperature.

The Marina manager told me a few days ago in a phone call that they have been warned by BuRec that the water forecsst for Folsom Lake is about the same for this year; they're expecting the lake level to drop back to 412' by July 15th at the latest, and more likely by June 30th. 412' is the elevation at which the marina has to close and all boats have to haul out, at 405', the docks start to go high and dry.

So, once again, slip renters will pay their $1200 and get no more than 3 to 4 month of slip use.

Dan.
Those were some amazing winter pictures of Flathead lake. We just moved to Attleboro from Helena MT where we used to sale on Canyon Ferry. We made many trips to Glacier where we would X-C ski or canoe. In Helena we used to sail an 87 ish 27' C&C and some smaller American Space Sailer craft which belonged to our sailboat club. I miss big sky country, though Narragansett Bay and the promise of Newport and the North Atlantic beyond is pretty awesome. Thanks for the pics.

Fair winds.
