WELL I DID IT. I RACED ON A 12 METER SLOOP, AND WE WON. WALTER MITTY LIKE EVEN,( ARM IN A SLING WITH A REAL DISLOCATED SHOULDER).
OUCH!
The boat was Stars and Stripes and the location St. Maarten.

Photos. photos etc.

I have a few photos and will try to post them, maybe even use one for a signature shot. Most of the time it was a hold on for your dear life experience. The professional crew were really into winning. gale force winds, single reefed main, rail in the water most of the time, water flying over head and up from the bottom even. It was more than exciting...try fearsome.

Congrats Val. I raced on that boat a few years back also in St. Martin - Stars and Stripes 55 against 56 and True North 4. We had MUCH better conditions! We got into a tacking duel with the other S & S on the last leg and were about to cross them when the jib sheet snapped!! Bummer

Derek, #5 was the S&S that we sailed on with Captain Jim Morgan in command. Great tactician.

What blew my mind was seeing the windex in a straight line with the boat when beating.
If you are anywhere where they race these old AC boats - you just have to try it!

Talk about mind blowing, I'm the kind of sailor who doesn't appreciate winds over 15 k and even that is a stretch. When we first approached the harbor I'm certain it's a no go day what with seeing ocean swells in the harbor with white caps all over. Seeing the mate approach I'm wondering how he'll tell us about how disapointed he is that we can't make it out today.... NEVER ENTERED HIS MIND as he marched us over to the launch all the while feeling us out about our experience on sailboats. SHEESCH !!!
