Has anyone made a tiller extension for their Catalina 25? I would like to make an inexpensive one to make it easier to sit on the rails. Any ideas? Thanks.
It sounds like a nice idea, but in my C-25, there are only a few inches of space on the coaming between the winch and the cleat and the "pushpit" and some camcleats I have. They all hurt to sit on.
On Piseas' C-250 it's a different story, for example, cause he has catbird seats that require either a very long leg or a tiller extension to steer the boat while hanging off the transom in the California sun.
If you cut a hole in your tiller, make sure to keep it covered and dry to prevent rot. See previous threads on "tiller failure".
Maybe you could show us photos of how you would sit.
The C25 is not a performance boat and it is poorly designed for sitting out. If anything it is better designed for sitting on the low side, which of course is a safe place to sit as long as you keep an eye out for high side traffic. I added a tiller extension to my C25 before I ever sailed it, I had always used one on other boats, and found it to be unusable.
My C25 came with a tiller extension. I have tried it a few times and don't care much for it. Racing friends of mine use it when on my boat, but one of them has sort of put it aside too. Generally, where I am comfortable in the cockpit does not require an extension.
Hey, This doesn't help you make one, but I think the price is reasonable and it's removable http://catalinadirect.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=product.display&Product_ID=492 Unlike some of the other poster, I find it very useful. Even with an autopilot available it gets used often. I don't exactly hike out with it but I do sit up on the gunwales, lean against the cabin, and stand on the cockpit seats on occasion. Without it I'm less comfortable.
