Feeding grapes or raisins to your dog can kill them. I recently saw a show about making organic vegan dog food (isn't channel surfing great?), and one of the hosts mentioned that you should never feed your dogs grapes or raisins but didn't explain why not. I did some research and it turns out that eating them can put your dog into severe renal failure, resulting in a long painful death. They don't understand the mechanism, but there are a number of verified cases. You can read about it on Snopes.com: http://www.snopes.com/critters/crusader/raisins.asp and on Wikipedia here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grape_and_raisin_toxicity_in_dogs
I sent this to a number of family & friends and just got a response back from a friend in Eastern WA (wine country). She said that it's rare for a dog that lives on a winery to live more than 6-7 years due to the toxicity of grapes in dogs.

Yikes, I have given my dog, Buddy, grapes! But he has never had any adverse reactions. I will have to ask my vet. That is very scary. I know you are not supposed to give dogs chocolate either and that can kill them. But one day my neices(3) came for a visit and had left in their suitcase, on the bedroom floor, with one of those hugs Kisses. Needless to say Buddy found them and ate all three. We found out only because of the aluminum foil there come wrapped in, scattered in my backyard. We thought for sure he would be a gonner but survived! Steve A
