I would like replace the solid fiberglass hatch in the forward cabin with a see through unit to let more light in. I am also considering a transucent deck prism. I either case the goal is to let some natural light into the forward cabin area. During the day this area is a dungeon. Any ideas?

Hi Seashot,

Catalina Direct sells a plexiglas replacement hatch, but it is pretty pricey. You can call them at 1-800-959-7245, Mon-Fri from 8:30a to 5:30p PST.

If you've been following the Forum for a while, you're probably already familiar with Catalina Direct. They are nice to deal with, and they stock all sorts of parts and upgrades for our boats. BTW, Catalina Direct sells the Catalina 25 Owner's Handbook and Catalog which is well worth the price. It has some helpful info as well as their parts/upgrades lists and prices (which are out of date).

'Can't help with the prism idea, although I've seen them and wondered what sort of results they give.

Remember Light = heat. That may be an issue to consider !

When I replaced the stock ports in the head with opening ports I saved and restored the stock ones. I then installed the solid unopening port in my forward hatch. Works great, heat hasn't been a problem.<img src="http://im1.shutterfly.com/procserv/47b2da34b3127cce9d3538aa93690000003410" border=0>
I purchased a spring loaded blind from the local auto parts store to reduce the day time brightness and give privacy when in the slip.

Whoa... Check out Ed's teak frames on the side portlights! And what's that on top of the doghouse, Ed--a traveler for a self-tacking jib?

Great ideas guys!

I have thought about replacing the forward ports with opening ones. Could move one to the forward hatch, and the other to the upper companionway door. I will look into the replacement hatch and see what the cost is.

Catalina Direct's listed price for the transparent hatch is $450.00. <img src=icon_smile_shock.gif border=0 align=middle> The following is the picture and text from their website:

This forward hatch retrofit will add to the spaciousness of your boats interior. No, it doesn't add room, but the additional light in the forward cabin sure makes you think so.

Molded of 1/2" Plexiglas, it's formed to the same contour as you original fiberglass hatch. But it's stronger, more attractive, and seals better. Yes, you can stand on it... 1/2" plex is thick.

Use the hardware from your original hatch or we can supply new those items which may need replacing.
