Here in Portland, Maine the snow is almost gone and the sun was out briefly yesterday. In Maine, this means that boating season might be coming. Anyway, I'm workin' on my projects and repairs lists, and one repair is on my outboard. I have four questions:
1. The model number of my 2001 Johnson 8 hp is J8RVXSIE. When checking some websites for parts, I find either J8RXSIE (no V) or J8RVSIE (no X). Does anyone know what the "X" and "V" stand for AND why I can't find my exact model number?
2. Any recommendations on websites for ordering parts?
3. Anyone painted the shaft of their outboard? If yes, what paint did you use and how did you prep it?
4. Does anyone have the same engine and if yes, would you be willing to copy the owner's manual for me? I'll pay for the copying and postal charges.
Will, sorry I cant help you-I have a Honda- but I am glad to hear boating season in the near future. I am sure you will find help here. Come on guys, lets get this sailor up and running. Time is of the essence. Steve A
X is the 25" shaft designation, but the model number code doesn't list a V in the fourth position. There can be a W that designates a commercial model. Follow this link: http://www.marineengine.com/manuals/johnson/
I'm in New England and have a mid 80's 25 inch shaft 9.8 Johnson that was serviced a year ago and has not been used since that I would love to sell, if you are interested. If you go the four stroke route the Tohatsu has worked out well. . .
Look out Crowley Marine the part catalog is online, and they are pretty speedy and efficient. The shaft is stainless steel, why would you need to paint it? Is it possible that the serial number is L and not V? There is a J8RLXSIE model http://www.crowleymarine.com/brp_parts/1274.cfm
