I have returned to the forum after an absence of quite some time and after reading some of the posts I see a lot of people with 250's talking about adventures in the Pacific Northwest.
For the past eight years I have sailed the San Juan's, the Gulf Islands, Princess Louisa and most of the islands between them and I have never encountered another Catalina 250. It is probably just a coincidence that I have not observed another 250 based on the number of forum comments about sailing in that area.
I am usually there around the first of July and after enjoying the fireworks at Friday Harbor or Roche I usually head north. I am usually returning around Labor Day weekend or just before my crew has to return to school.
I would love to connect with other 250 sailors who have sailed these waters and compare stories, places visited and even buddy boat for a bit while in the area or sailing to there.
I am headed up to Desolation Sound this year and hope to be there around the fourth of July. Anybody out there have similar plans?
Welcome back the forums! We have been up in the San Juans and Gulf Islands each of the last two years. But our schedule is different than yours, we go when the schools are in session to beat the crowds. That means launching right after Labor Day.
Are you cruising for two whole months? Also, what are the crowds like during July and August? Am I wrong to think those are tough times to get into marinas, etc? I would have thought the 4th of July at Roche or Friday Harbor would be very crowded.
Check out the Cruising forum here, there are some folks gearing up for a late June cruise in the San Juans.
Thank you Randy, I for two months usually with my daughter as crew (now 12 Years old), then my wife will usually fly in to join us for the last two or three weeks depending on her vacation availability.
It is crowded at times although you learn the migratory habits of the powerboaters after a while. They zoom ahead of you to the popular spots as it is the "destination" they generally seek rather than the "journey", so there is almost always a contengency of them leaving around 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. in the mornings. Also you can almost always get into a marina in the shallower area due to our shallow draft with the C250s. At Friday Harbor there seems to always be room for a smaller boat like ours along the walkway. I have never failed to get a spot. At Roache we just go to one of the nearby beautiful bays and drop a hook and have a fine view of the fireworks.
How is the weather after Labor Day? I hear it can be iffy at times. I bet you have most facilities to yourself at that time of year.
