Not seeing any other notice I'll start this one off. They did not give much not much warning but we all got off to a slow start Saturday. For those of you on autopilot it is time to check your boat. It looks like people enjoyed themselves in Rio. Light winds Sunday kept things quiet.
Mr. Milby and I were trading the lead all day, much of the day within 20 spots of one another and even tied at one point. Twenty places must be about two inches when the boats are this tightly packed.
The wind is picking up today so opportunity abounds.
Avocado got off to a rocky start (literally) running aground for a few hours on the point at Arraial Do Cabo, a quaint sea-side town east of Rio. We appriciat Gambit trying to warn us on the radio (good sports) but our 'bravado' told us we could cut that corner close and be just fine while we set the auto pilot and went back to the real world to finish off the keg from our neighbor's 40th birthday party the night before. Anyway, we got back on board and realized our folly quite late that night. After a few rounds in the virtual bar, we got the local help we needed to get off the beach and underway- but we've got some serious catching up to do. Gambit and Captiva clearly have the boat speed to keep up w/ the leaders, and Sanger is not far behind them.
Reminds me of the old saying "there are two classes of sailors: those who have run aground, and those who lie about it."
Guess I got too caught up in being able to sleep and/or not be tied to a computer. Finally logged in at 1day 20+ hrs to see the ol' "STOP" sign. Oh well, nothing like fighting your way from the back of the pack. Glad this thing doesnt support wind shadows...
I'll be on a real boat in the gulf coast next week so my little sailboat may be doing some strange things. Most of the Marinas will have wifi, but we will probably stay out in the bays most evenings.

And I'm supposto be a sailor. She is pretty smart though, she is following a professional sailor, the boat destremau.
It is cool to see what he does, with all the bells and whistles. <hr height="1" noshade id="quote"></font id="quote"></blockquote id="quote">
Captiva Wind and I are right on the heels of destremau, hope to pass him by morning.
We were rewarded by not chasing ranking into the shore. The benefits were short lived since they have had to claw back off the shore and pinch to get to the mark.
Sanger is right in our wake as well. Glad we missed the no-wind conditions to the south. I don't think I have even tacked once in this race.
Where are you going Champipple - did you hit the mark? Any one know why Kendall isn't showing up on the chart? Has he dropped out of the race? Lepac on AP isn't showing up on the chart either.
Kendall is riding on the keel of Lepak on AP! Champipple is heading south, I think he's concerned that he didn't round the bouy. Not easy to tell from the lines, they get smoothed out quite a bit, he was cutting it close but I thought he was ok from where I was watching (way back!)
I'm wodering if my place improvement was due to others not rounding the mark!
anyone else thinking of taking the gulfstream ride? Paul
I rounded the buoy but not the island. I went from 50k and change to 180 k+. I didn't read the SI's for this one so I figured I just had to round the buoy. When I rounded there were a few boats around me. Since the app isn't to scale they blocked out the Island. It didn't even cross my mind that the mark was an offset mark and not the only mark. Had to go back!
Well, if it makes you feel any better, I managed to hit the island. My friend asked me if my boat was special ordered with a titanium keel to deal with all the groundings I've had. I hit it minutes before I was heading to bed, took me the next hour to get off the island and around it.
For future reference, when the mark turns green, you've successfully rounded it.
Don't know if you guys heard the shot but there was gun fired at 15 days, 6 hours and 50 minutes, 2678th place temporarily.
I got lucky in that I was able to be at the computer during the opening day (doing taxes) and get around the corner of land cleanly. After that is was clear sailing without need for much intervention and good wind throughout.
After rounding the mark (which was darn lucky since I was away all day from the computer) I was just loose covering threats from behind. Captiva Wind was there from the start but did not get rewarded for staying north after the mark. Sanger and Avocado were threatening from the south much of the time after the mark. Avocado is cagey so he needed watching but he too was not rewarded for heading south. The holes seemed a bit smaller where me and Sanger crossed them 300 or so miles out from Boston.
Vida Nova and FPS II look to be in a battle for fourth place (if I have everybody).
Good luck to all for the remainder of the race. We launched our boat yesterday and had our first sail of the year today (not counting ice boat sailing). Now I have to research leaky knot meter sensors

Nearly but it took until day three to take the lead for good. Spent Easter neck and neck with Captiva Wind, trading the lead all day and within twenty places of each other most of the day. Avocado was probably leading most of day one, till he ran aground the first night I believe. Once a couple shifts went my way it became a loose cover/sail fast without taking chances game.
Well.. I was gone for about a week, and I seem to do better this leg when I keep my hand off the helm. So when this race is over, how will I virtual race?

Congratulations Gambit and the rest of you!
This leg confronted me with the two most important rules of sailboat racing, both of which I broke: Those who do well don't make mistakes (ran aground) and don't take chances and separate your self from the fleet (followed Aldabra and Stara Brokva low and fast in the south, and we all got caught w/ no wind)
Not a good leg for me. One should not be expected to deal with an online boat during teak countertop and table replacement, bottom painting, running line through 40 feet of mast, etc. etc.
I somehow started about 10 hours late (my fault) and was in 150k something (give or take 20k as if it matters) got caught with the autowind off sails turned on in a wind shift >180 - which sent me in the wrong direction. Got screwed rounding the mark b/c the put the mark on the inside of the Island then had to go back and take care of rounding. Lately my free time has been spent working on my boat.
This race story is starting to sound like one of Jim's races out in CA... (just kidding Jim)
