I checked out the owner's manual for the right kind of oil for the lower unit on my Tohatsu 9.8. I found out that I needed 330ml of 90 weight oil. Off I go to the local auto parts store but, to no avail. So, I trek off to WM and find the tubes I need. Unfortunately, they are 295ml tubes. Hmmmmmmmm. Methinks a conspiracy afoot, aarrgh!

Another option would be to buy the quart size and get one of the [url="http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://bpi.ebasicpower.com/mm5/graphics/00000001/LowerUnitPumpIllus.jpg&imgrefurl=http://bpi.ebasicpower.com/mm5/merchant.mvc%3FScreen%3DPROD%26Store_Code%3DeBasicPower%26Product_Code%3DMAL9-81002%26Category_Code%3DQWIKDRAIN&usg=__4lNpqR2Xwh0hzrKaYWhEBmTyffA=&h=456&w=216&sz=11&hl=en&start=13&sig2=ffdhVg3_nCfDK2RgGaKoNQ&um=1&tbnid=mq68ir-ixxVfkM:&tbnh=128&tbnw=61&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dlower%2Bunit%2Boil%26hl%3Den%26rlz%3D1T4GWYA_enUS310US310%26sa%3DN%26um%3D1&ei=BDXySYLKE5LitAOg5bzuCg"]pumps.[/url] Works like a charm.

No 90 Wt oil at a parts store? Now that's weird! Is it supposed to be 90 wt gear oil? Like in the rear end of most rear wheel drive vehicles?

I would also go for the synthetic 90. The benefits outweigh the small increase in $$$.

Difference = 35 ml. That much might remain in the lower unit when you change the oil.

The guy at the auto parts store told me that the 80-90 weaght gear oil on his shelf in quart bottles wouldn't work. Not really knowing and not wanting to appear less smart than I already do, I didn't press the point. But, Isn't all gear oil, well, gear oil?

Not at all. Some are mineral, some are petroleum and some are synthetic. The absolute best thing to do would be to find out what the outboard manufacturer's specifications for the oil are and then match that with the specifications on the product, for example API GL4 or GL5. That way you can't go wrong and you don't have to pay WM's price.

The owner's manual says API GL5 SAE 80 to 90. So, as long as these numbers on on the container, I'm OK?

Yes--the GL-5 is key.

Does the same thinking apply to 2-stroke oil? In my garage I have 2 stroke motorcycle oil, Lawn equipment oil, and outboard oil. it would be nice to reduce the bottle-count.

Yes, the same thing applies. Simply make sure the manufacturers requirements are met.
