Somehow, over a few too many beers, Harvey convinced me to race the Catalina. Hesitant at first I have to admit it was rather fun. Although we did receive a great number of snickers from our fellow sailors.
The race was the Cleveland "Sea Dog" and is usually a cold weather race, however Mother nature cooperated rather nicely this year. The lake only had 3-5 footers with 15 kts gusting to 20. With a 18+ mile course, the scratch boat only owed us roughly one-half hour (30 minutes)....
Anyway, I am pleased to announce that although we were the last boat to finish, we weren't in last place...After 4 drop outs, and some owed time we took a 9th out of 15th in fleet and a 30 somthing overall. The boat I normally race on took a 3rd in fleet and a 5th overall....It was quite incredible to see them broach....twice.....after I counted the 10 heads on the boat I took the opportunity to laugh at them..(as they "lapped" me)...
We learned a few things, however...
1. beer quantity = (number of drinkers-1)*course mileage*phrf over 1/2crew*(average per personweight+(crew*hullspeed/2) 2. You don't need to know where the next mark is when your in last place....just look where the leaders are. 3. Getting lapped on an 18 mile race blows. 4. Leave the motor, the table, the stove (microwave) and all but the required 2 cushions at the dock...If your gonna race be as competitive as possible. 5. He who is last to the dock, is last to the hot buttered rum party.

Gee Duane, now you really ARE ready for the Nationals! Congrats on not being DFL (I've been there, done that!) Derek
Let me know if you ever need crew for a race like that. I'm only about three hours away, and would love to race some Lake Erie sailors. Heck, I'd even jump in the water and help you scrub Wasp's bottom, if you'll assure me that there is nothing carniverous in that lake.

(Actually, I've been gone for a little over 20 years, so there may be some micro-organisms returning to it by now...

I read an article in either Sail, or Latatude 38 that talked about an Ensenada race where they give a Brass Spatoon award to the last boat across. Some notables earned this one, including Humphry Boggart. There is active compitition for it. People wait eachother out to be last.

Matt, I read that one too, there was one notable, I want to say hemingway who one it twice. If I recall though, there was a catch involved that you had to finish within the maximum amount of time, so boats would make their best estimate and wait about 2 miles out, only to turn up the tempo and try to squeeze in and get it. Incidently, its supposed to be just as prestigious to come in last as it is first in that one....I guess in a lot of ways, trying to lose probably isn't as easy as it sounds
