I help out with social stuff around our sailing club. In the last exec meeting a member with a dinghy membership showed up to make their voice heard that the non-sailors weren't being fairly represented in the club's social activities.

Our club mandate is that all activities are to be sailing related (we don't have a golf tournament). We do have a pig roast out on the docks, a number of BBQ's and more than a few other events.

The trouble is that we also have weekend cruises to such exotic locales as "the other side of the lake," and sometimes raft up and have a swim. While we invite dinghy sailors to join in the raft-ups (ever seen a sunfish rafted to a Tartan 3400??) and encourage them to find hosts for the weekend trips, they usually decline.

What events do other clubs offer that are equally inclusive to dinghy sailors and keel boaters? Is this a common problem, or are we unique? Honestly, the club was founded as a dinghy club by dinghy sailors, but the 2-foot disease has affected the club as a whole to the point that now the dinghy guys are having a hard time getting representation, and feel pushed aside.

Our club has a host of activities that even the stinkpotters (yes we have a few) can do such as parties, potlucks, 4th of July parades and fireworks, etc. As far as actual on the lake activities we are known as a racing club and there are many fleets that encompass all sizes of sailboats.

Wednesday nights are Lido racing but Thursday there are about 6 different starts for different classes including multi-hull, lasers, etc. We also have regattas, such as the upcoming Memorial Day Regatta, that feature two full days of racing and lots of eating and drinkng. Again everyone can participate. Well, the motoboats can't race!

Figure out a handy cap and have a regatta. Follow this with a BBQ and hand out awards. The regatta entry fee should pay for some flags, and every one likes flags. For the members in our club that attend 5 or more cruises, we awards them cruise flags at our yearly commodore’s ball. We also host some sort of a group activity like a game at each cruises. Some of these games seem a bit crazy, but every one gets involved and at the end of the day we all had a great time. Even if the prizes come from the bottom shelf of the local dollar store, we all have a good laugh

Good ideas guys. We have a very competitive (keelboat) racing fleet, but the dinghy guys don't show up for their own Tuesday night races.

I like the cruiser flags idea, however I don't see how that would get dinghies feeling more involved. We don't do a parade, except for sailpast, but that would be kindof fun. I think our biggest events last year were the AGM and the pig roast.

Conduct races specifically for the dinghy sailors, recruit them to crew on the cruisers. Have them race to the raft-up site, invite them on the cruisers for the raft-ups, and offer to tow their boats back afterward if there is no wind. There's almost always cruisers that don't stay out overnight who can tow the smaller boats back.
