I am the proud new owner of a 1982 Catalina 25. I will have lots of questions, but the first one is hopefully simple: my spinnaker pole had the plastic end broken off (the end with the sliding closure)and I have a new end to insert. I am wondering what is the proper way to insert this? It is very tight, and would need to be pounded in? Also, should I glue it. (This is a forespar pole manufactured by Fores Mfg, Tustin, CA)It has a ridge on the inside of the pole which must be for keeping the tip tight, but how to get it past the ridge?? Thanks
I replaced my twist lock mecanism on my pole by warming the end up with a torch, which is what Forespar recommends. I suspect it is the same process for the fitting, but would suggest you contact Forespar (That's what Fores Mfg stands for) via Email, they will send you the proper directions.
Thanks for the welcome and the answers! I look forward to being a part of this forum. FYI I did contact Forespar's tech help and they told me that I needed to cut off the end of the pole and fasten the tip with either epoxy or screws or rivets.
I had a 3" Forespar pole that had an aluminum end glued on. I soaked it with PB Blaster for a day and then held the pole with a chain wrench and used a bar through the end to twist and loosen it. I did not know at that the time it was glued. I could probably have heated it up with a propane torch and weakened the glue sufficiently to remove it. You might try that before you start cutting it.
I was putting my flagpole up in the front yard a little while ago and thought, "Hey, this might make a good whisker pole"! It comes in 5 sections that slide together. I didn't have a tape measure with me but would guess it's 1-1/4" aluminum tubing. To be used as a whisker pole I was thinking you could glue the appropriate fittings in the ends and drill a hole in each section where they slide together and use a snap spring? to hold the sections together. When done, simple break it down in to five 4' sections and stow them in the dumpster or under one of the settee's.
15-20 kts, wind shift, fold like a cheap suit, been there. Not with that specific rig, but one that was too small for the boat (plastic ends) I got real deal and LOVE it...
