I shipped my 40 foot trawler San Diego to Milwaukee for about $2/mile. That was 10 years ago, using a boat transportation company. They can haul anything up to 50 feet. With my boat they were also going to put a 20 footer on the trailer. Boatyard costs apply at both ends.
Being in Texas, I would expect there to be a bunch of boats around you! I shipped ours up from Detroit area to an hour north of Toronto in November when things were slowing down for the hauler. It cost us $1300 CAD in November of '07.
Some things to consider: * Be flexible on date - If you can wait an extra month, you may get a lower rate, avoid spring/fall when the shippers are busiest. * Go for a backhaul - This it the return leg for a shipper who is delivering a boat. Every kilometer they travel empty costs them, so you can sometimes get a reduced rate by being a backhaul. * Hire a towtruck and rent a trailer - Hauling Iris to the marina this spring, our flatbed was fine, however our tow vehicle was not. You may be able to rent a trailer and then hire a towtruck, or rent a moving van for cheaper than hiring a boat hauler. For a tow vehicle, I would watch for a tandem axle pickup truck if you have to cover any serious distance.
