as the year end i am looking to add a harken furling system to my 25 tall rig.
what one of the systems should i use?
the 00al or the 0 system?

also has anybody used their existing sails and had a luff rope put on and covered it with a rolling furler sleeve that has a zipper istead of putting the uv material on the sail itself?
how does the sleeve hold up in wind?does it flop around?

if you use a regular sail how much can you reef with still having a nice shape and pointing good?
if you use the foam or rope luff what differance does it make.
the only reason i ask is i just bought a new 135% and i would like to use this as a small amount of furler, say 135 down to 120 and not have to buy a new sail.

give me your thoughts

Dave,

When I bought a new 135 from Ullman last year, the sailmaker said you can take about a third of the area out of the sail by roller reefing and still have it perform relatively well. I have the foam luff- he didn't seem to consider it optional. The previous 150 that I had did not have a foam luff and did not reef well, but it was also on an an older furling system that was no good.

Don't know any particulars on the Harken products, the sleeves or on retrofitting older sails to furler systems...

Cheers,

Dave,

We have a Harken Mark 0 on our tall rig. It has performed flawlessly, even under challenging conditions. We would definitely recommend it. Don't have a foam luff on our large genny as well have several headsails, but would definitely go that route in the future.

Harken equipment is somewhat expensive, but definitely worth it. The folks at the company are especially helpful.

Best of luck,
