Take a look at my post of 10/12/08. There's a photo of Wicked Escort just after she arrived in WNY after a 650 mile road trip from Wisconsin. The mast support and bracing was done by the boatyard in Racine, and held up perfectly.
Stepping the mast can be dangerous business. Unless you have a proven system and you're going to be the "catcher" as the mast comes down, wear a bike helmet or something. I thought I had the A-frame figured out, but obviously didn't. 12 hours later, I still have a quite large lump on top of my head, and am lucky because it could have been worse!
