Consider a cut-off wheelbarrow handle for an emergency tiller. Cheap, sized right, just have to drill some holes and have some bolts on hand.

Excellent idea! Should be just about the right width. I think I'll get one to use as a guinea pig for testing out tiller lengths.

The PO of my boat actually did this as permanent replacement. I hated it. Until I took it home, sanded it down, and teak-oiled it. Now I like it a lot. I was gonna buy a proper tiller, but once I did this, I saw no need. It looks pretty ok, and feels not-too-bad. I need to sand a little more, and re-oil, but I'm satisfied with it. Maybe I'll varnish it, or whip a tiller wrap on the grip area.

As a side note to a previous post, my tiller does lift up out of the way, and I lift it often on a crowded boat. And it does this (afaik) without any modifications.
