Excellent idea! Should be just about the right width. I think I'll get one to use as a guinea pig for testing out tiller lengths.

The PO of my boat actually did this as permanent replacement. I hated it. Until I took it home, sanded it down, and teak-oiled it. Now I like it a lot. I was gonna buy a proper tiller, but once I did this, I saw no need. It looks pretty ok, and feels not-too-bad. I need to sand a little more, and re-oil, but I'm satisfied with it. Maybe I'll varnish it, or whip a tiller wrap on the grip area.
As a side note to a previous post, my tiller does lift up out of the way, and I lift it often on a crowded boat. And it does this (afaik) without any modifications.
