Wehn I replaced the gudgeons and pintles on my boat I found that, with the new design Catalina has for the pintles (the bottom one having a longer pin than the upper one) the hole for the cotter pin on the upper one was not visible. I called CD tech support and basically it appears that the problem lies in a slight variation in the distance between the gudgeons vs. the distance between the pintles. I had to drill new holes in the rudder for the pintles as it was, and now it would appear that I would have to do that again. Rather than doing that I am ordering another pintle with a long pin which I am going to cut a little bit (1/4"-1/2") off of and drill a hole in. I would recommend anyone undertaking this project to consider doing this at the outset, especially if your boat is in the water when you do it.
I just elongated the hole in my old pintle, filled it with epoxy puty, and re-drilled the epoxy for the cotter pin. Both pintles should rest on their respective gudgeons, so the distance between upper and lower pintles and upper and lower gudgeons should be the same. The problem is that the upper gudgeon with bushing is longer than the standard gudgeon and the upper pintle's length to the hole. I thought that CD's longer pintle was supposed to address that issue.
