I just had a long talk with the organizers of the Border Run. You may remember this is the 66 mile offshore race from Newport to San Diego. I placed 2nd in class D to a Capri 25 this year and first monohull overall (all classes) doublehanded. There is also a 95 mile course if you want to go longer.
I'd like to get some Catalina 25, 250, and Capri 25's and use the Border Run as the venue to compete for our National Championship.
Trailer or sail to Dana Point. Guest slips available $30/night. Anchorage available. Pre race party in Newport. Race 66 miles offshore downwind. PHRF rules. Spinnakers, asyms. Non-spin offset for non spin boats. We'll have our own start. Cost $95.
Finish in San Diego. Free guest anchorage or guest slip. Free on the water shuttle to the party.
After race party with live band. Skipper bags with goodies, crew raffle. Compete for PHRF trophys and for our own class trophy.
Stay the weekend in San Diego or motor back to Dana Point (45 miles).
This is maybe your one and only chance to be A NATIONAL CHAMPION in something.
Well, that's my bid. Anyone interested? Come on, lets get 6 boats.
By the way, there have been no other bids tendered. If any are out there, bring 'em.
Sounds like a great opportunity for west coast catalina owners. I've done 30 miles on an asym spinnaker with15 knots of wind. We made 12+ knots on 4 foot waves. It was FUN surfing. I was dragging my 8 foot zodiac which was full of water or we would have been going a lot faster I'm sure.
I agree with AL, it does sound like a LOAD of fun... for west coast sailors. Thing is, I'm not sure how far I would travel for this. Don't let me get in your way though. I don't think I would take the boat further than the Great Lakes (Ontario, Huron, Erie) and I don't know if I'd take my own butt much further than the East Coast. California is a bit of a hike for me.
Out of towners could make a real vacation of it. Do the race. Head back up the coast. Go to Catalina Island, even the Channel Islands. Race weekend is the last weekend in April.
I'd love to get other bids so come on with some ideas. I don't want to do 2 Nationals in a row on the West Coast so if someone else steps up we can make this a Regional Regatta.
You know Jim, you're on one end of the continent with sun, sand, and california girls. I envy you. Please send the girls. I can deal with the snow and clouds.
Last year I offered to put on a regional here and I can count all the takers on one finger. Maybe that makes me the regional champ. Not sure.
Anyway, we can only lead horses to water. you have a helluva good sounding drink there, and I say go for it, I only wish I could travel to be part of it.
Would anyone go for a race crossing the "other border?" Say we did a regional up here from Picton, Ontario to Rochester New York or vice versa. Good long distance race, a chance to see how you perform against similar boats, and some comraderie at the finish line. I could truck the boat to Toronto for it and sail to either venue, and then come home via the canal. Folks from the States could come up on the Erie Canal to Rochester, or truck their boats in.
Surely its not as exotic as Jim's Cali cruise, but it might work as a more central ideas for folks up this way. I can't do it for this summer but maybe 2010 if Iris is still kicking around then.
Jim, What are the dates for this race. My older boy and I have done the Delta Ditch Run, about 70 miles three times. We missed this years race, my mom broke both her legs and I had to take a bunch of time off for that and didn't want to miss any more days. But next year looks good.
Jim I have already registered my boat for 2010. I had a blast crewing for Jim in this years event and I think it would be worth a serious look at Nationals or no Nationals for anyone close to the West Coast.
let me add that you don't need to be a member of a yacht club and you don't need to have a PHRF San Diego or PHRF So Cal certificate to do the Border Run. I will take care of your rating.
The race is the last weekend in April, at the same time and on pretty much the same course as Newport - Ensenada.
