We finally launched Elan this weekend. After a lot of work getting her back into shape, which included repainting the hull, rewiring the interior, cleaning, cleaning and more cleaning. She was rechristened on July 4th at Herron Lake in New Mexico.

Although she is an older model, 1978 hull 482, she still sails well. Some of the modifications we did were to refit her alcohol stove as a propane version following the instructions in this forum. We created a propane tank holder off of the stern rail using Corian, aluminum angle and copper tubing.

We added roller reefing this year from CDI and recut the 150 jib to a 135 with a reefing bead. This we got from SailRite along with a lot of help.
Last year we had her in the water just one weekend. This year we hope to sail her much more in the boisterous mountain lake winds.

We had a bit of a shock the first time we took her out. It was pretty breezy and she pitched around. When we returned to the dock we found 6 gallons of water in the bilge and lockers. (view from port settee locker)

I was concerned. We didn't bury her rail or anything like that. I had all sorts of visions of a leaking keel trunk etc. But subsequently, I found that I had detached the water tank hose from the sink hand pump and it had flopped around under the sink discharging water into the bilge. We pumped it all out and dried up everything everywhere. We wanted to see if in fact we had a leak.

That night it rained heavily and in the morning I found about a cup of water in the area under the sink. I couldn't tell if this had come in from the rain or otherwise. She seems to gather a little water over time. How much I haven't been able to tell yet.
So I have a question to the forum. Is it usual for these boats to accumulate a little water in and around the swing keel cable trunk? How much is too much?

I have a wing keel so can't speak to the keel trunk but most of our boats have SOMETHING leaking, a dead light, a stanchion, anchor locker, cockpit drain.....................
(edit) Oh, and you've got a really pretty boat there!

Hi Steve. Its been some time since my swinger was a swing, but I do remember having taken a sink rubber stopper and cutting a slot in it to allow the cable to just barely pass and jam it into the cable tube. A liberal ammount of duck tape helped. My swinger did pass water on occasion and it was handled in this manner quite well.

I have a rubber hose crom the cable's through hull that reaches nearly to the winch drum and rarely take water there. I have solved most of my leaks, but as noted, it's extremely difficult to eliminate all of them on an old boat. I am down to a cup or so after a heavy rain and thrilled.
