It's just a very small ticking /clicking noise which drives the unhappy occupant of the quarter berth nuts. We are at anchor for the night. The lower pintle moves ever so slightly in the gudgeon. I tried immobilizing the rudder by jamming a towel between rudder and transom, used shock cords ... nothing works to eliminate the ticking. Is there a bright idea of how to deal with this nuisance? Thanks for listening. Joerg
As you probably guessed, your gudgeon is worn. Catalina Direct sells new ones with nylon bushings that should eliminate that. You might be able to find similar bushings in a hardware store, although they might require drilling or reaming the gudgeons a little. The lower one is easy to replace (with a helper)--the upper one doesn't require the helper, but it requires cutting a hole in the cockpit and installing a Beckson inspection plate.
Meanwhile, you could remove the rudder and lay it in the cockpit for the night. A "quick release" pin, shaped sorta like an R, might help.
I had a problem with rudder slop from worn gudgeons. I bought 2 bronze bushings from Ace Hardware and had them lathed to a tight fit (in fact we had to force the gudgeons into the bushings). No more rudder slop and smooth steering.

Do you mean the pintles?
I just looked at CD's site--they offer a kit for installing the inspection port for the upper gudgeon--you can even rent the hole saw from them. Those guys are good!
