A while back, somebody asked me to post some pix of the Mystic area... A neighbor invited me up in his little Piper Cherokee on a beautiful afternoon last week--here's the Mystic River (I-95 at the bottom), Mason's Island, Fishers Island Sound, Fisher's Island, and The Race, with the south fork of Long Island faintly on the horizon.
Mystic Seaport is on and around the point on the left side of the river, in the middle of the photo. My place is basically under the plane (left side of the river), and looks like this:
Sarge is the leftmost boat on the dock.
The colors are not oversaturated--this is what it looked like up there! Too bad I can only offer tours at sea level.
Association Port Captain, Mystic, CT Past member and DPO of C-25 #5032 Now on Eastern 27 Sarge (but still sailing) and posting as "Stinkpotter". Passage, Mystic, and Sarge--click to enlarge.
I love aerial photography ( fixed wing that is), what a great way to get an overview of an area. Yepper.... I'd say you have some good anchorages there. What a beautiful place.

Now a blatant commercial... The historic Mystic Seaport toward the center is America's premier maritime museum--well worth a whole day if you can come. The highlight these days is the last wooden whaling ship, the Charles W. Morgan, which is now on drydock. You can climb up on deck and see the multi-million $ reconstruction going on below. There's a free anchorage toward the lower left of the picture, just outside of the Seaport. The rest of that wide estuary is pretty shallow, with a marked deep channel.

Beautiful area! We have visited Mystic Seaport and it is awesome. Also visited a fairly nearby submarine base and museum. With that bridge between you and open water I guess there wont be any sailboats at your docks!

My wife and I will be passing thru your neck of the woods this Thursday. We are heading up from Virginia to visit a friend in Plymouth, Mass and then on Saturday heading from there to Ludlow, Vermont to spend a week with two other couples at a vacation house.
My wife has never been to Mystic and so my hope is to make it there around lunchtime and introduce her to the Mystic Pizza place. We will only be stopping there for a very short time so that we can push on to Plymouth, Mass. I have been to Mystic a couple of times when I was up in the New London & Groton areas.
were out of norwalk ..we have a great down town area by the town dock $2 a foot.. Sono Seaport is close by ..west marine , resturants , movies all real close , a great place to visit if you like to get off the boat for a bit
I'm in Stratford, in the Housatonic River. I've launched my daysailer from Vet's park and have sailed the Norwalk Islands. Sono is very cool.
Except for the main channel, the bay behind the islands was a little "scratchy" even in my centerboarder. With a 4+ ft draft in Passage. I'm a little skittish about tooling around there in the Catalina. Do you know the unofficial channels in and out of Norwalk Harbor?

From the east, it's up to you and your chartplotter--or "follow that (bigger) boat".
i think coming in from the darian side is marked better , but if you cut through the islands midway at the light house it is also marked but their further apart ... you kind of stay close to the back side of the islands till you hit the main channel , then make a 90 to the right ,on the main channel
Sean Google and NOAA have some great tools. I use the NOAA Online Chart Viewer for specific charts by number.
Yes we're fortunate to be close by several other C25, C250 and Capri 25 sailors. Some are from CT and some are from LI. We may have to organize an LIS event at some point.
You may also know of LISCA, the Long Island Sound Catalina Association, where members can have any size Catalina sail boat. I've enjoyed spending time on the 32 foot+ size boats.
I've been invited to join, but with work, the US Power Squadron (Milford), the activities at my Dock at Brewer's Stratford and home life, there's not enough time to join everything.
Bruce... My wife and I joined some years ago--less for the activities than for the annual "West Marine Night" where members loaded up their carts and got 10% off everything. (That was also the annual meeting--right in the store.) Of course, now I live near Defender (and don't won a Catalina), so it's moot...
Dave - great photos...beautiful area. OT-the first thing my Dad did upon retiring (mid-1970's) was get his pilot license, build a grass landing strip, and buy a Cherokee Arrow. He had a lot of fun with that plane.
Larry - if your travels to VT bring you anywhere near Burlington (about 2hr north of Ludlow) give Les and I a call. Would be glad to show you around town and if your schedule allows go for a sail.
O/T: Thanks Gerry... I gather the Arrow has retractable gear--this one is about 40 years old, with fixed gear and an amazingly simple, low-hp VW engine (dual magnetos, dual fuel pumps, a block, and that's about it!)--the KISS principle at its best.
It seems to me your dad must have been pretty skilled to land a little nose-wheeler on grass... As for my retirement, I can't afford to even start dreaming about that--I can tell it's virulently infectious! I'll hafta stay happy down on the water--I should probably even stay away from the MS Simulator and, for realistic scenery, the Google simulator. (...although every time I "fly" into weather or blow a landing, it re-sets my perspective!)
Gerry, I was on vacation for about 10 days and then afterwards did not get back into this specific posting till now, so I did not see your offer to visit in Burlington Vermont. Anyway, by the time you posted, I was already on my vacation. One day, we did head a bit north of Ludlow to a small town halfway to Burlington to meet up with my wife's old buddy. But thanks for the offer !
Dave,
I wanted to thank Dave for his great hospitality for the brief time we stopped by in Mystic, Conn on the way to Plymouth, Mass and then to Okeemo Mtn in Vermont (in town of Ludlow). Dave gave us a scenic tour of the Mystic town area in "Sarge". This is a very nice town to stop by if you ever in the area. Lot of history in that area...and all narrated by our boat captain "Dave". Here's some snapshots of Dave and I onboard "Sarge" Also a snapshot of what is left of Plymouth Rock (which we visited while we were in Plymouth, Mass). The story goes that the rock had no real significance back in the old days except that settlers used it to get off the boat launches. So...after a time it became recognized for that function and became a landmark. As it became more popular, people started taking chips off the rock as souvenirs. They then put a fence around it so that you can look at it but not deteriorate it any further. It is presently about 1/3 of it's original size.
