This depth guage came with the boat, so I don't know how long it has been installed. I'll assume it has been there a while, because all the writing has been rubbed of the face.

My problem is when I went to the boat today, the reading on the screen was 888.(It may have been 88.8 which is mentioned in the owners manual as a faulty logic circuit and to return the unit if it is new) It is difficult to see in full sunlight and there is some condensation behind the screen.

How can I find out if it is the display, transducer or both?

Is there a way to check the transducer with a multimeter? What reading should I get?

If I have to replace, is this a good model to get again?

Has anyone else had a condensation problem with this model?

Thanks everyone,

Frank

Frank,
I can only comment on the condensation, we don't have your model of depth gauge. We do however get the condensation like you mention. I've noticed that it only occurs when the covers are on, and once exposed to the sun for a while, the condensation clears up. Now whether this is a problem or not has yet to be clear to us. We take our covers off of our instruments pretty much as soon as we get on board for a sail, so they have time to clear themselves. The electrician in me says to worry about the condensation, but I'm not sure how I'd cure it, and it doesn't seem to affect their performance (yet).

My guess is that your transducer is just fine, there are no moving parts inside of it, and unless you've broken a wire to it, it's unlikely to fail. The display on the other hand is a thin sandwich of silicon and other minerals that are electrically connected where water could play havoc if you had sufficient condensation. Have you allowed it to sit in the sun till the condensation goes away? Does it start working normally then? Is there a backing plate where you could place some desiccant to help dry out the display? (there isn't on mine, at least not where I can get my fingers into).

Give Uniden a call, they've were pretty helpful when I had a small problem with my (admittedly new) VHF.

Let us know what you find out.

I was at the boat early today, maybe I'll stop by this afternoon and see if the condensation is still there. I haven't moved anything around so I don't think I've hit a wire, but while I'm down there I'll check it out.

Thanks for the ideas

Well I went to see the display around 3pm.
It still had condensation, but it worked.
I saw some screws that I think hold on the front "glass".

I'll try to take it off and see if I can dry it.
I'll let you know if everything goes alright, if not ......
