Can someone tell me how to stop the webmaster's e-mail concerning info that I did not request? I tried telling him by replying to the e-mail, no luck! Sam Plummer, scplummer@gmail.com
Sam, if I understand what's happening, that's not actually e-mail from the association's webmaster. The association has your e-mail address on record so it can't be seen by anybody but you... However, there's an option to allow forum "members" (anybody who is registered) to send you an e-mail without knowing your address. This protects you from spammers' address harvesting systems that scan web pages for e-mail addresses. Some outsiders are registering on the forum and then using that function--something that we can't really prevent. (I just sent you a sample.)
But <i>you</i> can stop it. You can un-check the option in your profile that says "Allow forum members to send you e-mail". I prefer to allow people to contact me, even though a few spams have come through the same way. It's a labor-intensive way to spam, so there shouldn't be very much of it. Just don't--DO NOT--reply to the messages! Your reply goes back to the spammer, <i>with your address</i>. Also, it's not a good idea to put your e-mail address in posts on the forum--the spammers will pick it up.
Sam, I'll suggest that you start by editing your initial post (click in the header) and remove your e-mail address. Note that Paul camouflaged his address by "spelling it out"--that way the spammers' automated systems won't recognize it as an address. If you elect to disable the forum's e-mail function, you can use his technique to include an address in a post.
Sam forwarded one of the emails to me, I was able to confirm that it was a subscription email.
I followed the email link to the article on the forum. Then I logged in as Sam (Used my Admin privaledges) and could see that there was a link to 'Manage Subscriptions' which only appears if you are subscribed to a topic/forum.
Following that Manage Subscriptions link, I unsubscribed.
All done.
So if you find that you have inadvertanly subscribed to a forum or topic, just follow those steps (of course you'll just login as you and not use the admin process to do that.)
