I am wanting to get anyone's opinion on a headsail bag. There seems to be quite a few out there. Different prices, material, color, and most importantly: design. I don't know much about them other than what I've seen in pics, so I had a question about how they are attached. I know you must release the halyard and attach it to the end of the bag to lift it, but should you also release the tack? Or does the bag reach down that far and cover the sail near the deck?
I'm specifically looking for the same material and color as CD's other covers. Unfortunately they don't make a headsail bag.
Anyone not like them for some reason?

Ah the jib bag, I loved mine. Yes the tack stays connected and the hanks stay on the forestay. The halyard comes off and lifts the bag just off the deck. The secrect to loving one is how you fold the sail so it fits in the bag while the tack and hanks are still connected. Flake the headsail all to one side: (note the downhaul on the sail)
Disconnect the sheets and make sure the flake pattern is carried back the length of the sail:
Fold the sail from the clew to the headstay in a size that works for your jib bag:
Pull the bag over the bundle and your done. Putting a sail away in a deck bag does not save time but hoisting it is sure quick. I had mine custom made by a guy on ebay and had a mesh panel put in the bottom to help with moisture control. I think he started doing that to all of his bags.
If you can get one with 2 zippers, one on the forward edge, and another zipper across the top, it will make it easier to bag the sail. Back before we had furling, we could zip the forward edge of the bag around the forestay, with the sail was up. Then when we dropped the sail out on the lake, we could quickly stuff it in the bag. Back at the dock we could safely re-fold it correctly stow it.
I bought mine on ebay and the person making them had a variety of Sunbrella fabrics. I was able to match the main sail cover (and winch covers and lifeline tube cushion covers). My headsail cover has a snaphook for the bowplate connection and a zipper at the forestay. Fold the sail on deck as indicated above and stuff it into the bag, zip it around the front of the forestay almost all the way, move the halyard from the sail to the ring on the bag and finish zipping up, tension the halyard a bit and you are done.
We had a hank-on jib on our C22 and got a very nice headsail bag from West Marine. They have a mesh panel on the bottom for reducing mildew, two zippers, etc. Was very well made and we were happy with it.
So how is it used? Do you go forward and unzip the bag, attach the halyard and then raise the sail. Then go back to the bow and retrieve the bag or does it stay there? I have one but I remove it once the sail is up.
I bought my hank-on jib bag from Robert Pyfrom: email address is neetra-at-ccis-dot-net. His ebay auction id was: comboat Paid $42.00 for it. It's been a good purchase. Ed, I go forward and unzip the bag, move the halyard from the bag to the sail, unclip the bag from the tack shackle, slide the bag off the sail, and toss it down the forward hatch onto the v-berth. after running the sheets through the blocks, the sail is ready to hoist (from the cockpit).

Stow it. Unless you're the type that leaves your bumpers out as well But I think the wind would have the bag blowing around and would generally be a pain and quite a mess.
I always stow my sails when daysailing, but when cruising, it's nice to be able to leave bagged sails lashed on deck at night, so they don't occupy any of your limited stowage space.

I received my hank on JIB bag from Mr. Comboat based on the recommendations from others on the site. Service was excellent. The bag matches perfectly to my mail sail color. Shipping was quick.
