Chris, It looks to be Catalina, So I'm assuming this is from a later model. Mine is an 87 and it looks identical to mine. The blue looks like bottom paint so should be very easy to strip off and re-apply the VC-17. It should also have 1/2 inch pintles, another upgrade.
Won't argue -- I guess that I assumed that the IdaSailor "High Performance Fixed Rudder Blade" i purchased from Catalina Direct was the balanced rudder. I checked on the Ida Sailor site and the "performance" rudder looks like mine, but is different from your sketch. Now my curiosity is going which leads me to the question what is the general difference between the original equipment "regular" and "balanced" and where does the "performance" one fit in.
Peter, I don't think the IdaSailor "High Performance Fixed Rudder Blade" is the same rudder as the balanced rudder Catalina makes. The balanced rudder has additional area which extends forward under the boat which offsets some of the pressure applied to the rudder aft of the pintles. Basically balancing the pressure applied over the surface of the rudder. I am not familiar with IDA's rudder or what makes it "high performance". Here is the drawing of the balanced rudder and a picture of the standard rudder. You can see how the leading edge is pushed forward as opposed to the standard rudder.
Thanks for the input! What's even more interesting is looking at my receipt from CD (from whom I bought what I thought was a "balanced" rudder from, it says . . . balanced! That being said, it has worked fine for me these past three seasons.
Both IDA's and Catalina's newer rudder are balanced. The primary difference is the construction. IDA makes their blades out of solid High Density Polyethylene (HDPE), while the Catalina blade is a fiberglass shell with foam core. CD sells both. We have had reports here of the HDPE blades snapping in two, but I haven't heard of a failure of the fiberglass balanced rudder (which I bought). The original unbalanced rudders, with wood cores, have also snapped at the lower pintle--generally because of rot in the core.
In the unlikely event that I win this thing, is there anyone on here that lives near the New York/Ontario border and would let me have it shipped to their place? I'd like to avoid cross-border shipping fees.
I will be able to pick up PDQ once it arrives. I'll even buy you a beer or two for your trouble.
Interesting that the HDPE would snap -- I would expect bend as the material is much more susceptible to warpage, etc., and HDPE in industrial applications is a lot tougher. I know on smaller boats HDPE is the preferred material for rudders and dagger-boards but maybe on a rudder that is almost 6' long
My HDPE rudder bends, I was concerned, called the factory, and he assured me its ok. Green stuff is growing on it, I need to figure out what to paint on it to keep that from happening. Not sure what sticks to HPDE
I have used ablative bottom paint on mine and it works reasonably well -- just can not clean it as the paint will rub off and if/when any rubs off the barnicles grow very quickly.
