This week I'm off to the Newport (RI) Boat Show with the admiral, and we plan on staying a few nights just to get away. We're driving the car.

Next weekend it'll be the Norwalk CT Boat Show and a good friend of mine from Glen Cove plans on making it an overnight. I plan on meeting up and walking the booths with him and having dinner, then later on rafting up and sharing a few beers. Let's hope the weather holds out.

I would like to moor somewhere behind the Norwalk Islands in a protected cove without major rocks, but as far as I can tell, its all pretty thin water inside the islands.

NOAA Chart 12368 describes it pretty well, and there's a nice section behind Chimon Island that's between 4 and 9 feet (MLLW). According to the NOAA tidal predictions, tidal departures should be about +1.5 above MLLW on both low tides.

Given our 4 foot draft, will this be enough water for mooring, or do I really need minimum 6-8 foot water?

There's also a section between Chimon Rocks and Grassy Island with 8-13 feet of water, but it's on the LI Sound side, or the outside of the islands, and if a southerly wind kicks up, I'll be rockin' and a rollin' all night.

For those more familiar with this section of water, where do others generally moor up?

FWIW, there's a guest dock on the east side of the river below the drawbridge right in downtown S. Norwalk, where there's a ton of nice, casual restaurants. I don't know the fee, but I think it's reasonable. The show usually runs some "water taxis" that can be hailed on VHF. I can't help much with the islands--I only anchored during the day behind Sheffield, and that's subject to big wakes from substantial traffic (commercial and pleasure) in and out of Norwalk Harbor. I never tried to figure out the water around the eastern islands, but I would think the area between green #11 and Betts Island (N. of Chimon) might be pretty good, and easy for the water taxi to find.

I'm thinking of going to the show Thursday morning...

I'm planning on going on Friday, but if you're in town on Thursday, let me know. I could take a little time out of job hunting and errands to stop down at the show . . . .

Now it looks like I'll do it Friday--probably around noon on my way to Darien (one lantern). Watch for the Tilley hat.

My buddy from Glen Cove got a job, so I won't be sailing down and meeting up. Meanwhile, I plan on meeting a buddy from the Stamford Power Squadron on Friday morning around 10am
btw, the "fixed" is fixed

Did you go to the show? I stopped by for an hour today, and saw many of the same vendors as at Newport. They had the guy with the $70 softside coolers and the other guy with the $30 coolers, as well as the guy who sells the $24.95 brass polish that will polish any metal back to its original shine and lustre.

Defender was there, but without the $43 handheld waterproof VHFs. I told the guys who were there that I told all my dockmates to go to the Norwalk show to get the radios and they didn't have any there!

I got there around 2PM... Of course the vendors were the same as Newport--they migrate from Newport to Norwalk to Annapolis... I was disappointed that the only sailboat I saw was the big Island Packet motor-sailer. Year to year, Norwalk varies from no sail to a few sailboats, to a moderate number--never the full complement. I guess Western LIS is not sailing central--no wind! The big-money sailors have boats custom-built in Rhode Island and Maine. So the show sailboats go from Newport to Annapolis, non-stop.

So I guess you could say I spent $20 (parking + admission) for two hours of nothing much... except seeing the totally mind-blowing things that some builders are creating for the people who have many, many multiples of my entire nest-egg. I treat that like going through a museum--nothing here to buy--just to look at.

Dave,
Of all people, I shouldn't have to remind you, but it's Fairfield county! If you don't go out and buy something excessively garish and completely over the top, why even bother? Isn't that what conspicuous consumption is all about?
