Since I'm "between positions" I find myself with a lot of time on my hands. So, yesterday I took a 3 hour drive to Ford City, PA and visited the good folks at Sailcare to get my mainsail cleaned. I met Don in the front of the place and he directed me to the back where Denny and Jill inspected and measured the sail. They were really friendly and they didn't think my sail looked as bad as I thought it did.
They're going to replace all of my slugs; sew on the number and Catalina 250 appliques so that they don't come off in the cleaning process; and, sew on telltales. They have 5 or 6 large tables for sewing and repairing sails. (They also make sailcovers, biminis, jib bags, etc. at these tables) Then they'll send it to their other building where the actual cleaning process takes place.
I'm probably going to have them ship it back to me when it's finished. I'll let you know the results.

The cleaning of the sail is $125 minus 15% if you take advantage of the current offer. I think it's 85 cents/sqft. The replacement of the slides is $11/slide (I need 9) and the sewing of the numbers, insignia and replacement telltales bring the total to around $330. Shipping is added to that. All tolled, it's less than half the cost of a new sail. I guess that if you wanted your sail without the Catalina logo and numbers, you could eliminate that sewing. The cleaning process releases the adhesive that holds them on. I had my O'Day sails cleaned there a few years ago and they really did come back looking and feeling like new sails.

That's terrific, I need to figure out if my main is actually blown out or not. If not, that sounds liek a terrific option.
Peter, In my case my original (I think) 20 year old main looks a lot like me (a 50 year old man). The sail is is in good conditioon other than the foot of the sail has a "gut" if you will, much the same as I do! If yours looks like that it's blown out.

That gut in your main may be a shelf foot.
Peter...What is the vintage of your sail that you're considering having reconditioned? If it's an older sail, having it reconditioned may be like putting a new paint job on an old car with a blown engine.
