Hi all, I used to live in Seattle, where I would kayak a lot, and where boat stores abound.
Now I've been living in Taiwan for 4 years, and on an island like this, where fishing and sea bound transporation is big business, you'd think I could find a boat store somewhere. But no luck!
Does anyone venture this far and would you know where I could find boat supplies/boat stores, etc. around Taiwan?
I've heard that casual boating here is actually illegal, since it gets in the way of the boating industry (fishing/shipping). Taiwan until the 1980s was under martial law, and the coastline was heavily watched, incase of invasion by China. Most Taiwanese people don't even know how to swim, and get sea-sick out on the water way too easily! Hard to believe, considering it's an island.
Anyway, mostly I'm into solar stuff and I think buying solar gear from boat stores is a cool way to go. Just curious if anyone knows why there isn't a boat-lifestyle-culture around Taiwan, other than for fishing and international shipping. I have seen a few river kayaks in the water, but nothing serious like you guys own and opperate. I don't think I've even seen a cruise ship dock here. Maybe too shallow?
