It gets mighty cold up here in NH. We put a new compass on ESSAYONS last season & I'm wondering whether or not I should take inside for the winter or leave it mounted on the bulkhead. Any risks in leaving it in the freezing temps ?? It's a Plastimo......

It's full of oil. Shouldn't be any problem.

Steve,

It gets quite cold in upstate NY too, and I have never had any trouble with the oil freezing in my compass.

Now for someplace COLD. Herein North Dakota----my boat is actually in northwest Minnesota--- I have never had any problem with the compass freezing. Of course we seldom get below 30 below for extended times, though 25 below for two weeks or so is not unknown.

On the flip side....

Now for someplace really hot, in Southern New Mexico, summer temperatures routinely at 100+...never had any viscosity breakdown, though I have switched to synthetic oil in my compass. (ha-ha)

But year-round sailing always here, could you guys send a little water down for our dwindling lakes?

Have a great winter all.

NO! Sorry, but we want all our water in the lake for next year.

Talk about hot, it gets so hot here in California that I have seen the oil in my compass boiling. I just popped the top off and used it for fondu.
