If it were not 32 degrees, I would love to head out and use my reefed main and storm jib to scoot around the river and the bay.
...but it's not gonna happen. It would be simple to sail with storm jib alone downwind to the east or south, but then it would be miserable tacking back home to the north and west with the calculated wind chill factor of 15 degrees.
A few years ago I reached hull speed with the storm jib alone, when sailing with a friend on our way to an overnight anchorage in October. I'm still waiting for some warm January or February days that are going to come.
Also, by the way, I have to work today.
Happy New Year, everybody!

the most fun part about sailing to windward is the feel of the wind in your hair and the spray on your face. At 30 degrees temperature and 40 kts of wind, you should look like a polar bear before too long . . .
Sailing downwind on a day like that will be one to remember - come to think of it, beating to windward in those conditions will also be one to remember, but for different reasons!
Still sailing? This is the best time of the year! It's a cool 60 degrees. :)
Forecast says 11mph and 57 degrees friday. I just may head out. Plus, I got some goodies. New sheaves, exit block, jib deck bag, those fancy SS covered turnbuckles, and a on-demand water pump.
