Wouldn't southern California and Catalina Island be the thing to do?

I thought of that but this will only be my third year with this boat and I've never been in unprotected waters before. I've read that the smallest boat to attempt Catalina with is 25 feet, that means I just made minimum requirment. I have 1989 wing keel how rough can those waters get? Its a little intimidating but it would be way cool to do!!!

thanks for the reply

Ted

Ted - talk to Steven on Piseas. He is docked at Long Beach and has made the trip several times. He's very helpful and will give you all the information and contacts you need.
Another location to try would be Lake Mead or Lake Powell. I haven't sailed Powell, but we spent a week sailing Lake Mead and are going back to do it again in June.
There was an article in cruising world a couple issues ago about trailer sailing some lakes in Washington and Idaho too...

I've never sailed on Lake Powell, but I have spent a fair amount of time there on "other" boats. I think it'd be a blast to take one of our boats there. The lake is beautiful, be sure to bring a canoe or at least a dinghy so you can easily access the beaches in the canyons. There are startlingly beautiful coves that are virtually inaccessible without a narrow boat. In our case, a jon boat wasn't narrow enough for some of the coves we found, and a canoe would have been able to negotiate the canyons. Imagine canyon walls shooting up 100', but narrow enough to touch both sides at the same time, and a tear drop shaped sandy cove visible through the gap, but you can't get there w/o swimming. The water temp in the late summer was pretty agreeable until you dive below the thermocline, which is about 30' down or so. I'd imagine Lake Mead is pretty similar. I've only been water skiing there once, but as I remember the water was pretty warm.

To David's comment, Powell is arguable prettier than Mead. Powell has all the redrock steep canyons and fascinating slot canyons draining into it. I've talked to several people who have sailed there, and the consensus is that the steep canyons block most of the wind, so you spend more time motoring.
Mead on the other hand, doesn't have quite the steep canyons, so the wind is better. I spent a week in the north arm of Mead, and the wind was fantastic. It was quiet in the mornings, but picked up every day by noon and continued to evening. When you are done sailing, you can turn up any of the side canyons and find a little cove to anchor in.
Here's some pictures and my blog from that trip if you're interested. We went in early June.

You know San Francisco Bay is great sailing, with several kinds of water and wind conditions. It's certainly not as warm as SoCal but it's a lot closer to Oregon. Just a thought!

There's also Lakes Shasta & Trinity. I've never been out on the water on either, but I know the water in Shasta is warm enough to swim in. When I used to drive to Southern CA from WA, I'd stop there with my dogs so we could all go for a swim to break up the journey.

It's surprising how much difference a long stop can go towards making a trip shorter. The dogs loved the chance to get out and run around & chase balls in the water, and I got the chance to just laze about for a while.

Somehow that made the longer drive time shorter.
