Ours was Poliglowed over many times by the PO. In order to get the old name off, I used th etip of a box-cutter to lift the vinly letters, and the rest just peeled off. Taking them off was easy.

There was a definate shadow where the letters came off. I tried wetsanding to remove the poliglow, but it was a long and arduous process.

Eventually, I gave up on that and went to Easy-off oven cleaner as an alternative.

The easy-off worked great. Spray on. Have a beer, wipe off. No trouble.

As for getting the lettering straight, The Vinyl cut letters come on a sheet with a grid to help line things up. Just try to keep them close to parallel to the waterline on the boat. The decks are not as good an indicator IMHO. One side of my boat has the letters crooked, but the other turned out well. No one else has said anything, and SWMBO says I'm too critical - they look fine.

Bear in mind that the at dock, your fenders my rub on your letters and lift them if the name goes too far forward. Check you letter placement as well as your fender placement to make sure this isn't an issue for you.

Finally, here is the whole lettering process...

Here's some more info regarding my lettering:

I purchased the letters from Boat US Graphics, http://www.boatus.com/boatgraphics/default.asp . As it turned out, Boat US Graphics is located not that far from me at the Boat US Insurance Hqtrs in VA. They use to have a window into the adjacent Boat US/West Marine store but closed the WM store a year or so ago.

Similar to how others reported receiving boat letters, these letters also come as one or two piece depending on length of name. I ordered two copies, so I could place the name on both the port and starboard sides. I had found that when using the Boat US online order form, it was going to very expensive for two names but once I completed the ordering steps, it then appeared that the 2nd copy was at a significant discount. I cannot recall exact costs...believe it was just a bit more expensive than some other online sources. I like the ordering ease using their website to see the graphics/name on the screen. Also, there is another benefit if you order from a place near you. In my case, I smudged a letter or two pulling into the slip and needed some replacement letter matl to cut a little patch over the one or two letters. Going down to the store with my original order number, the Boat US personnel cut me a free scrap of about 8" long to use for repairs.

I put the name on while boat was in slip and I just sat along the finger slip edge with the help of my spouse since it was a long name...about 54".
