They did not mention the polarity of the water molecule being responsible for the extreme surface tension of water. I think they are giving the natural bounce off the surface too little significance and I doubt the "air layer" cause is a genuine contributor to the bounce, it is just their contrived excuse to act surprised. Discovery channel loves to sensationalize common phenomenon.

But a beautiful example of high speed photography!

It would seem that this is the way water generally acts and when it all goes down in a millisecond I suppose the air might not have time to move. And I think that when slowed down by high speed photography where we can see universal laws in action "the common" can be quite interesting and reveal itself to be pretty complicated.

Dave's clip seems to conflict with Gerry's... maybe due to different frame-rates?

I think they're acting just alike. I was looking at craters over the week-end and noticed that they also seem to act the same way.

Frank, I think you nailed it.

DaveB, they have to be related although I suspect that differences in the momentum of the drop hitting the surface may explain the different videos. DaveR's clip ends just as it appears the last droplet may be bouncing on the surface.

Actually to understand surface-atmosphere exchange over water surfaces requires consideration of the processes captured by the videos - probably not much interest to most folks although (1) James Lovelock, who played an important role in developing instrumentation and the field of Earth system science was an avid sailor and spent many weeks sailing aboard his own boat developing and testing his ideas, and (2) evaporation of those upward projected droplets results in a relatively high concentration of particulates in the boundary layer which can serve as cloud condensation nuclei (think Pacific NW) or as corrosive sea breezes (think Gulf coast). OK...I've had my fun.
