I've been "lurking" on this site for several weeks contemplating a purchase of a Capri 25. I found one, put in a bid and it was accepted. I guess I'm the owner of a 1981 CP 25.
The boat appears to be in good/great shape having only been used in fresh water and apparently used very little.
The boat is currently located on a trailer with the mast down and my initial inspection revealed no significant problems. The hull keel "joint" area looked good, without any delamination (soft spots). The outboard bracket area doesn't have any stress cracks. The interior looks new. The mast and standing rigging has been upgraded. The "chain plates" look good.
What other potential problem areas should I be looking for?
Welcome to the club. It sounds like you have covered the critical areas. I'd suggest you read all of the old post strings on this forum. Lots of good information here and that should complete your picture. Enjoy the boat!
Thanks for the welcoming comments. This Forum is an invaluable resource.
I'm located in Northern California and the boat was listed on Craigslist. I viewed the boat in between thunderstorms and really need to go back and do a thorough inspection of the boat and associated equipment. I've committed to purchasing the boat but no money has been exchanged.
I will post specific details, for Andy, of the boat later next week. My first job is putting new tires on the trailer and getting it "roadworthy" for the trip home.
I purchased a CP-25 10 months ago and suggest you get ready for possible leak around keel. The area can look perfect but still leak. Pull keel inspection plate and watch after it goes into water. Pay close attention to what Chris and Prairie Princes recommends. They are very good. A great boat and you should be pleased Russ Foster #354 Dallas, TX
Michael; Welcome to the Capri 25. I am a partner in 2 Capri 25's located over on Clear Lake and we are also members of the Konocti Bay Sailing Club there. We are an active group with club racing twice a month and also participate in OSIRS (old salts in retirement) sailing every Wednesday. We would welcome you to participate in our programs either with or without your new boat. You can see information on the club and our activities at www.kbsail.com. A big part of our club is hosing an annual regatta called the Konocti Cup sailed the end of April every year. This is a 26 mile race that attracts 60-70 boats from around the bay area. This year we are also participating with the Catalina/Capri 25/250 association president, Russ Johnson, in putting on a regatta June 12 on Clear Lake. For more information you can contact me directly or any officer of the KBSC. Jim Carlsen
Thanks for the info on the sailing activities on Clear Lake. I'm planning a "mini-cruise" to Catalina Island, in April, and won't be able to attend the Konocti Cup. I'll try to make the June Regatta if I can find some crew. Please keep me posted.
My boat will eventually be berthed in the SF Bay, this summer, and I would like to extend an invitation for fellow Capri 25 enthusiasts to join Me sailing the Bay. I look forward gaining some sailing "insight" from experienced CP25 sailers.
I wound up purchasing a Capri 25 that was extensively raced in San Diego, not the one in the initial post, and would like to continue the tradition up North. Feel free to contact Me if you want to go sailing!!!!!
