I am in the process of cleaning and lubing turnbuckles and will use Bill Hillcombs guidelines for getting everything re-tensioned. One area he does not address is the adjustable backstay.

Any reccomendations on how to adjust the turnbuckle on the backstay? When tensioning the rest of the rigging how should the adjustable backstay be set?

Install the turnbarrel so it has good thread engagment. This barrel and the one on the bow of the boat (forestay) will control mast rake. This rake (how far forward of aft the mast leans) will effect your weather helm. You may need to sail the boat a few times in a fair wind to get this setting right. You dont want to much weather helm but you DO want some. When your setting this up you want no tention on the split back stay mechanism. If you have to much force on the rudder ( boat wants to round up into the wind) tention the forestay and slack of on the afterstay untill it feels right to you. Be carefull to keep plenty of threads engaged in the aftstay turnbarrel.

Another piece of omitted information, I have the CTI furler so I find it difficult to gauge the amount of tension, any tricks?

Doug,

<font face='Tahoma'>osmepneo has a split backstay which I adjust depending on the wind considitions. As the wind increases I tension the rig, pull the top of the mast aft, and as the wind decreases I allow the top of the mast to go forward, easing the backstay adjusting line.

When I set up osmepneo at the beginning of the season, i.e. raise the mast, I tension the forstay, which has a cdi roller furler on it, then raise the mast. After fastening and adjusting the shrouds, I put some tension on the backstay. I guess for me, the backstay is the last adjust and is done in respone to the wind.

Im sorry. I have no experiance with the head sail set up you have. Never had roller furl on any of my Catalinas. My new boat has a Harken and Im just learning the tricks with it. I want to install a genoa car system I can control from the cockpit.
