Next races is Wednesday at 3:00 a.m. CST.

I actually got up at 2:45 to watch the webcast on ESPN360.com. I went back to bed after listening to some commentary. I recommend this site to anyone else that is interested in watching. They also have the telecasts archived in case you want to watch it at a reasonable time of the day. ESPN360.com is apparently available to you only if your ISP is one of their partners. Comcast, my provider, is on their list so I was able to watch.

I downloaded the video player, so I guess AT&T is one of the affiliates. I got a re-run (er background story) when I first looked at the video, then the coin toss.

They showed the "non-start", but the discussions about the design of the boats was fascinating. The discussion of using the wing instead of a sail was cool.

A note that Larry Ellison said he hoped they would win on the water, not in court. An issue stemming from the indigenous-ness of all the parts of the boat. Turns out Alinghi's sail was mainly built in Nevada, with final construction in Switzerland! Could be a court fight later in February about this issue.

But without wind, it's all talk, but no action.

I imagine that the Wednesday race ought to be a little more exciting, if they have some better weather.

Larry shouldn't be allowed to speak without his lawyers present; so oblivious to the public this race is for. Who cares. The friends I've tried to introduce to sailing after the last AC would now rather follow Golf for Christ's sake. The "AEC" Amerka's Ego Cup.

Makes Jessica's blog sound refreshing.

It's unfortunate what the AC's degraded to, but this really is only another chapter in a long, sordid history - it's nothing new, just current.

Get it done on the course, be it a golf course or a race course.

Besides, you dont teach your kids to drive by having them watch NASCAR. Nor should the AC be used to induce people to sail. Unfortunately, sailing just isnt a spectator sport - so it's not like you can say "hey, come out and watch the races - then get involved". You gotta take 'em for a ride.

Well, just determined that my ISP isn't affiliated with ESPN360, guess I won't be watching.

I use [should I admit it?] Internet Explorer 8.0, and I allowed activeX to run during the download.

I've also downloaded the current versions of Java and Flash. I use my old Win XT platform.

I play a computer consultant on TV, but I can't imagine why it worked for me.

How ridiculous is that? I'm sorry, the SuperBowl is cancelled. Peyton doesn't feel good and needs a good massage. come back tommorow...

WTF? We frequently sail in conditions wherein we are "lacking a favorable wind direction." Doesn't stop us from trying. This is why I just don't care and I suspect the masses don't either. Poor form if you ask me.

Why do they insist on racing in the morning? I'm guessing it's because Alinghi wants the lightest possible air so Oracle has to drag its center hull.

BS, BS...... they basically don't want coverage in the US. Only France and the UK care anyway. Us sorta normal folks can't freaking compete even if we were a millionaire thereby ruining the AC cup anyway.

No race because the wave height (3 feet) is outside of the racing parameters defined for this event. Lame! The winds were a perfect 11-13. Alinghi got to set the parameters for the event and their boat is expected to perform better in light air and flat seas. So, accordingly, the rules were established keep them from having to race in conditions that did not favor them. Double Lame! It is hard to believe that 3 feet is an excessive condition for 90' boats...

I'd have to agree, I know I've been racing in 3' chop on Puget Sound and there was never any thought (that I'm aware of) of calling the race. And I usually raced on a J-92 which is roughly 1/3 the length.

I found a spot on the AC page where we might be able to watch live coverage, but so far I've only seen static images on the "medium" stream and a constant "buffering" message. Perhaps they're simply not broadcasting till Friday, dunno.

Give it a shot: http://www.americascup.com/en/regate/regarder-la-course/show.html

Edit: I refreshed the screen and it looked like it advanced a few frames, so maybe it actually is buffering, who knows.

I imagine that there was a quite a bit of interest in the race (non-race), and so perhaps the server may have gotten overwhelmed.

It seems to be running now on my computer under IE8 on my Win7 computer

I haven't been able to make it work under Google Chrome at all... IE8 seems to work fine. Too bad--I don't use IE any more, except I guess for this. Larry Ellison wouldn't be happy!

I exclusively use firefox but they've been nice enough to include as an add-on, "view in IE" for those places that are only IE friendly.

Pretty amazing 236 foot high flexible hydraulic wing. It flies like a plane.

Correction: 238 feet tall!

But neither the AC site nor ESPN-360 seems to have the replay (although ESPN-360 points to one that doesn't exist. Has anybody found it?? In fact, ESPN.com doesn't seem to know it happened--it's nowhere on their site.

And how does it take 6 minutes to do a penalty turn??

Oracle started 660 meters <i>behind</i> and finished <i>10 minutes ahead</i> (not including the penalty). She covered the course in something like 2:24--sailing higher and faster (20+ knot VMG to the upwind mark). Looks like there's not much point in a second race.
