As one wag on the forum put it, the "Evil Empire" is back in print for 2010. I received my new catalog the same day my copy of Mainsheet came in. The range of items they offer for sale is just incredible, as are most of their prices!
But there are a lot of one of a kind items that you just can't get at the RV store, Harbor Freight or at Campmor. Defender and Boater's World (online) do a good job, and you can find some blue birds from time to time (like the inflatable PFD), but wow WM just has a vast array of stuff.

Not defending prices across the board, but it is expensive for a retailer to stock a hugh array of slow moving items. That is simply part of the service you pay for.
edit: Speaking of WM service, I damaged an led trailer light that was part of a relighting kit for my brand of trailer (from WM). They didn't have the exact light shaped for my trailer, just a universal one. Apparently the supplier creates the kit. Amy, at the Destin WM tracked down the supplier's light provider and has managed to have one shipped. It took her 3 days just to find the source for the Chinese lights, but she persevered. That is one of the reasons I shop at WM most of the time.
I can't fault them... Brick-and-mortar retail operations, especially seasonal ones, are expensive to run. Their service here is very good. And at my local store (half a mile from home and five miles from Defender's warehouse), I get some nice price-matching!
Kudos to West Marine. Their price matching policy is awesome. Bought a Leatherman Charge for about 90.00 because the kid at the counter found a cheap knife on the internet. Plus it's just nice to be able to browse at the candy store. I'm waiting for the early March sale to make good on my priority list. Trying to make my boat more ready to make it to Block Island or Nantucket this summer.
