Several years ago I lived along the channel entrance to Pearl Harbor. I could swim out to the deep water channel towers and watch the navy ships coming in or going out. It was truly fascinating.
One time I was watching a nuclear submarine coming in, and happened to jump in the water to do some snorkeling as it passed. I was so surprised to actually be able to hear the sonar pinging underwater with my bare ear. It sounded exactly like an old WWII movie - the loud pinging sound every couple of seconds. I was really surprised, I thought somehow that the sound was not actually audible to the human ear, or that some new technology would have been invented since wwII.
