A boomkicker came with our boat -- it has been flawless in operation -- I highly recommend.

I tend to grab the boom for support as I climb around - not good with a kicker. The pigtail actually has a name that I can't recall at the moment (ain't gettin old grand); perhaps Frank will chime in with the proper term.

I was thinking of getting a Boomkicker. Why would this not be a good support. The boomkicker I looked at seemed very sturdy. I tend to grab the boom getting on and off.

I don't have one, but I believe they do not provide support for a sudden large load as when you lurch and grab the boom. Perhaps I am mistaken. I'll stick with a topping lift so I can easily raise my tall rig boom when tied up.

If you tend to grab for the boom getting on or off, or when you lose your balance on board, do not get a boomkicker. My boat does not have one, but I race (C-22) with a guy who does have one. I'm having to re-learn to not reach for the boom because it "gives" too much.

Well, You all have convinced me. I think I will go for a topping lift.

You'll be saving money, too. A topping lift is a lot less expensive than the Boomkicker.
